Hatch NM Police officer killed

A Hatch New Mexico police offic was shot and killed during a traffic stop yesterday. The suspects then carjacked another vehicle, shooting it's driver.
Godspeed to you brother Chavez, may your family, brothers and sisters find peace.

To those out there still on the job, please, please be careful. There is nothing considered routine anymore. Be safe.

Unbelievably sad to hear this. Rest easy officer, and thoughts to the family and friends.

More info...

Police Officer Jose Chavez was shot and killed while conducting a traffics top on Franklin Street at approximately 3:40 pm.

One of the vehicle's passengers exited the vehicle during the stop and opened fire on Officer Chavez, wounding him. Another officer who witnessed the incident immediately called for assistance and pursued the subjects at high speeds for several miles.

The occupants then carjacked a second vehicle at a rest stop along I-25 near Radium Springs, before continuing to flee. The subjects were taken into custody after a successful stop sticks deployment by responding officers.

Two of the subjects were identified as fugitives wanted for murder in Ohio.

Officer Chavez was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, where he succumbed to his wounds.

Officer Chavez had served with the 8-officer Hatch Police Department for two years.

RIP, Yet another tragic loss of a fellow brother or sister trying to do a job of making the community a safe place live. When is this assault on Police going to stop and not be accepted. If you attempt or kill an Officer it should be an automatic death sentence for the suspects involved if convicted. NOTHING LESS!

If you act like a rabid animal you should expect to be put down like an animal.
I'm surprised to see they were apprehended alive. It shows remarkable restraint.
RIP

I understand your anger fellas but when these threads turn political they get shut down, its happened numerous times before. I do not disagree with you but let's leave this thread as a memorial thread. God Bless the fallen.

And people wonder when there is the rare unfortunate incident of police getting over zealous when trying to protect their lives.

Man, Tim. It's so sad how often you post these notifications. The officer is almost fortunate when compared to the lifetime of grief his poor family will experience. So heartbreaking.
