I doubt many folks will take issue with the 39mm size. A bunch of guys on this forum own the Vantage which is a 39mm homage to the 1016.

This is an old picture, but you can gauge the size (39mm MkII Vantage) relative to some common Rolex models.

Just taken delivery of my new explorer and love it....think the size is great as 36mm just felt too small for me. Like you spent ages deciding but very happy. Getting slightly fed up with a lot of people moaning about the hands issue, Rolex know what they are doing it is VERY elegant, the lines and finish of the watch are gorgeous and sits beautifully on the wrist :)

The new explorer looks great, but I'm not a fan of the shorter hands.

nice watch dont think explorer was worn on everest , they wore oyster perpetuals and a smiths , the explorer was brought out as a tribute to the climb most people know the truth the rolex hilary wore was a white dial oyster perpetual .
