Hi guys, hope you don't mind me posting this question, it's probably been asked 100's of times before.

I am about to buy my first rolex but I am really unsure what to watch out for and what one I want.

I have seen a white ROLEX MILGAUSS which I really liked. It's an approved dealer so I guess it's a safe bet. He was hitting me with the big sell - telling how rare it is and how I will need to buy it now etc....

He had a Green Crystal but wasn't selling - he is waiting on approval from Rolex to sell it - no idea what this means.

I'm on holiday in the caribbean in a couple of months so was thinking of holding off until then to see whats available but I have heard some horrow stories about this.

Anyone got any advice for me please?

First of all welcome!

The Milgauss is a wonderful reference and very popular. As to being rare..at one time perhaps the black and white were hard to find, but that's changing as more and more examples come onto the scene. The same is apparently the case with the GV version as we see by the number of new owners recently.

Coming from an AD you have no worries, but don't feel pressured into buying the first one you see. They'll be there.

The best advice we can offer is to try on those in which you're interested, as well as those you're convinced you don't like (they will often surprise once on the wrist), and choose what smiles hardest at you.

The white Milgauss is a nice piece.. I like it.

However, as said, it is not a rare watch, just one that has fewer production numbers than some other models..

Get the one you want to wear on your wrist every day all the time...

Personally, I do not think there are great deals in the Caribbean and then you have customs etc. to deal with....your situation may be different..

Find the one YOU like. Don't just buy one because they are hard to find. At some point you'll look down and know it is "the one". Happy hunting.

Look around at many dealers and try several of them on and see what feels best on you. the white Milgauss is great i love mine!

First of all, Welcome to the Rolex Forum.

90 days ago, I was in your situation with little knowledge about a Rolex but, learned alot after discovering the Rolex Forum----Thank You Members.

My first suggestion is to take your time, read the forum posts and find a style you like. Determine a budget for your style. You can view various websites including e-bay that reveal market trends. I finally purchased a nice Rolex from the Rolex Forum. In fact, my purchase was the first time I wore a Rolex.

That Green Crystal crap sounds like sales hype. If you are going to spend thousands of dollars on a watch, know your seller. Get plenty of references.

You are buying the seller not the watch....

With some diligence you will make a satisfying purchase.

I like the Milgauss. It has a nice contemporary look.

you're a.d. is full of it! approval from rolex to sell????

rubbish!!! if it's sitting in his showcase he can sell it to whomever he'd like.

definitely do not fall for the hard sell, especially from that guy. miglauss white and black dials are easy to come by these days. nothing about those watches warrants a premium or special standings with your a.d.

Take your time and look around at the different styles Rolex has to offer. If you find a model at the AD then apparently its not that rare now is it. Always be careful of what the AD tells you because they are sales people and many of them will have some reason why you should buy it immediately. As members mention some models such as the Mil. are difficult to find, but if you are not in a rush to buy immediately, you will be able to find one. For the green crystal Mil. that AD is holding out. I bet he is trying to use it as leverage..spend $20k on this watch and I'll sell you the green cry. Mil. The only watch that I think will always stay rare is the SS Daytona. As many months pass, all the Milguass will be more available. With the new releases of the DDII and DeapSea, these will be rare initially because everyone wants to be the first to own it.
Every Rolex looks great in person so ask yourself what you are looking for...classic, sporty, lively, fun..etc. The white Mil. looks great. I think it's not as "classic" as the DateJust or Sub/GMT, but it's different so not as many people will have it and you will be more unique. It's also contemporary so it adds a little fun and youth to your purchase. As long as you buy it at an AD I think you are safe to buy it in any country. The only thing you may have to consider is duty taxes when you get home. Before you go overseas, check the Rolex website so you will know which store is actually an AD, rather than buying at a place that you just think is an AD bec. they sell Rolex.

Welcome aboard Vic! My advice is to try on several different models and you'll find the one. What you see in a picture and how it fits the wrist and catches the eye in real life can be quite different. You have already started out on the right foot....stick with an Authorized Dealer if at all possible.

Good to see a fellow Scot! I really like the Milgauss but will take everyones good advice a try loads before deciding.

TOPH - what are you feelings about buying in the caribbean? I know they can have some good discounts but what about getting back through customs? Is this a problem?
