Purchase Quandary / Advice Needed
I'm currently traveling and came across two local ADs that each has available on hand one of two watches that I really like: AD #1 has a Hulk, AD #2 has the black dial Milgauss. AD #2 is a regional shop with a reputation for not willing to negotiate, while AD#1 is local shop that's supposed to be amenable to discounts but, with the Hulk being so popular, I'm doubting they will budge much. AD#2 offered a very small discount on the Milgauss ($300) and that's the watch I really had my eye on, but that Hulk is (of course) very alluring. To make matters even more interesting, I'm in a city that doesn't have sales tax, so I would save that money as well.
In any case, I'm just trying to decide what to do here. I feel a $300 discount is nowhere nearly close to what I could get at another AD selling the Milgauss, and I could go back to AD #1 and try to negotiate on that Hulk, but it will likely be an unfruitful endeavor. Of course, I do NOT need to get a watch... This is 100% a wholly optional purchase (this obsession of ours is crazy...) and I will be likely be in Europe in September (not yet decided on UK, or continental Europe) and the USD being so strong now (and forecasted to remain so for quite some time) I could also wait it out two months and purchase overseas. So, fellow TRFers... What say you? Pull the trigger? Wait it out? Also, has anyone bought a Milgauss BNIB at an AD with a discount of 10 or 15 percent? Is that at all realistic? I really thought it was, but maybe I'm wrong. |

It's good to expect that you will not get a discount on ANY SS Rolex. However, it is possible to get a discount and 10% is a fair number on a Milgauss. Most likely a discount will come from some relationship established with the AD. Good luck

I think you're overthinking it. If there's a watch you want, come up with a number you're comfortable paying. Make an offer to the AD. If they say yes, buy the watch. If they say no, walk away.

I pick the watch first, not the price. Then I look for the best deal.

I'm reviving this thread only to close the loop by letting you know I passed on both watches at the time, but recently took a short trip to London and treated myself to that black dial Milgauss. I love it. And, the final price I paid was untouchable: the pound is low, and the VAT refund makes for a nice discount.

Instead of the black Milgauss think outside the box. Why not look at the 2016 Air-King which is essentially a Milgauss with same movement and same case. It wears the same as a Milgauss and actually has the brushed links. It's a fantastic watch and costs less.
Give it a try :) |
