Not a big fan of the 6 digit reference but something about gold and that blue dial is absolutely stunning.

It's kind of like a flow chart.

First, there's owning a gold watch in general: Having a gold watch on your wrist has an incredible look and feel about it. I can't tell you about it...it's something you've got to experience for yourself. Now, I freely admit, this isn't for everybody. Not everybody wants it or experiences the joy when they strap one on. And that's OK, to each their own.

However, if you do like the look and feel of a gold watch, that's where I can make the case for the sub. The sub, with its glide lock clasp and super adjustable bracelet, is one of the most comfortable and adaptable sports watches in the line up. This is key when you're talking about wearing a gold watch...it's very heavy. The DD, which many members will tout as the 'proper' PM, has zero adjustability.

The timing bezel is one of the most useful functions for every day life I have found (and I'm no diver). Add this usefulness and the comfort/adjustability to the stunning good looks and feel of all gold and you've got a home run, IMO.

I get that it's not for everybody. But, I also think when you're talking gold watches, the sub is right at home.

I didn't like YG - but then I bought one. You know what; that changed my mind - the same way my first Rolex changed my mind when I said 3 months earlier that "I will never buy a Rolex..."

Life is about evolution - even mental.

That is a stunner.
Is it just me or does the internal cut section of the crown guards look slightly angular.. looks like five cuts/edges instead of three?

Did I read somewhere that crownguards were machined by hand..that would explain the slight variation?

A pic I borrowed to compare:

Sharp eye.

All later 16618 looks the same. Here are some other watches from other series.

However - a 1991 does not:

What am I missing? There are many other gold watches I'd prefer before the Submariner.
fair statement.

but clearly people want PM subs, which is fine. they're good lookers for sure.

the fact the DSSD, SD and submariner (not the sub date) don't come in PM should be of comfort to non PM dive model fans.

I believe salt water is harder on stainless steel than gold since gold will not rust or corrode.

Of course stainless steel corrodes - and the hint is as you said in the name: Less is not resistant. ;)

...but in ref to our SS watches with 904L ..Rolex calls 904L stainless steel a “corrosion-resistant superalloy.”

Also, that's interesting about the crown guards on later models. Thanks for sharing.

A friend and I were chatting (we both own Rolexes), and were discussing gold watches. He said...when you have the cash to buy a gold watch, yet you still buy a Rolex...

He's also the one who got me into fancy watches, that, when you look at it, it's silly how much we spend on them.

However, I didn't realize that a Gold Submariner, for example, hold it's values very well compared to other high end watch makers.

About the only other watchmaker that holds value like Rolex is Patek. I'm not sure even Vach and AP would fall into that category, but stand to be corrected.

Because it is unnecessary, redundant and a bit silly., that is what makes it awesome. I have been considering a white gold, but all the pictures of the yellow with the blue could be changing my mind...

I actually like the look of a gold Sub, especially with a blue dial. But I just can't consider a gold watch. I'd look at it and see two SS watches...

I'm a diver, and take my Sub (and Sea Dweller) diving with me every time I go sub-surface... however mine are SS models... I'd have a hard time diving a gold watch.

For me the yellow gold submariner with blue dial is by far my favorite PM Rolex. I will own one in the future. Right now I just have too many others on the list to get first. Lol

Great pictures guys. I'm never get sick of looking at him.
