Anyone else get surprised this Christmas morning?

Just wondering if anyone was really taken off guard by a Watch gift they received for Christmas this morning??

I knew the wife visited the local jeweler where I have looked at/bought several preowned pieces in the past. They are an Oris, Hamilton and Tissot AD. So nothing fancy.

Last we were there together I looked at a preowned PP and a LNIB Tudor Fastrider Chrono I was offered for $2500. It was during a watch event and the Oris rep and I were there discussing their bronze.

So I was sure, knowing my love of Tudor, she picked up the Fastrider and had it under the tree.

WRONG!!!!!!!

It was the Oris Carl Brashear Bronze. Watch came in last week and she saw in their Facebook post.

She was scared sick. After she bought it I told her I was going to pass when they got one in to pick up the Tudor BB Bronze as I was not thrilled with Oris use of a Sellita movement.

As they have a 30 day return policy no questions asked, she bought it. And is now telling me to do what I want with it. She seems genuine. Is it a trick???

Merry Christmas Happy Hanukkah to everyone.

She already knows how you really feel so I'd return it for what you want and consider that your gift.

I have been married for 20 years and I know for certain she is well aware that I am extreme grateful for her thoughtfulness. I know she was 100% sincere in saying do what I want with it.

I bought her a Christian Louboutin handbag that may end up getting exchanged too and I am good with that.

Just feels a little wrong to me.

You exchange the watch. She exchanges the bag. Everybody's happy!

Likely how it will go down. But who knows, maybe there is room in the collection for 2 bronze watches??? This one is #14xx/2000. Maybe it will hold its value long term and I can enjoy it in the meantime???

my wife has returned all kinds of brands. At a certain point sentiment exits and economics enters. When a few thousand is floating around you should get what you want.

My mum taught me at a very young age that if I didn't like a gift then speak out or forever hold my peace. Her theory was (and remakms to this day) that she'd rather be mildly peeved at me returning a gift than be frothing at the gills because I never ever used/wore it.

I say the same now to anyone else I buy for. If you don't like it then switch it up for something you do like.

Brandon, if you prefer the other watch mate, then change your gift for it. Your wife will appreciate it in the long run

Go for the exchange since you can.

But, personally, I think you have the better watch.

Thanks Rudd.

I really do like this watch. And I even stood there with her and talked to the Oris rep about it for quite some time. And she will not be mad if I keep it and buy the Tudor.

Just more that I was surprised that she bought it than that I did not like it.

I got her pretty good too. We went to Saks the week before Christmas and she bought a LV bag as part of her Christmas. But it had to stay in the box until Christmas. Day after we bought the LV my 5th Avenue club gal calls and tells me the Christian Louboutin bag she was wanting went on sale (by a lot). I had her locate one and ship it to my house. Put it in the LV box under the tree when she wasn't looking and bam surprise #2 of the AM.

I like that this is a mm or 2 smaller and waaaaay thinner as it is only rated to 100m. I will never dive with it anyhow. And the curved blue dial and domed crystal is pretty impressive.

Don't be put off by the Sellita movement. Everybit as good as an ETA in the right hands. Many independents are moving to Stellita and every review I have seen of them over the past couple of years have been great. ETA has the reputation and in watch world that counts for a lot, but they are no better in real terms.

I first noticed this with Archimedes. They were always ETA all the time. They started to go to Sellita in their divers. The ickler folks are pretty particular when it comes to their watchmaking right down to poo poo'ing any suggestion that the packaging be made just a tad nicer. To which their response was, in very broken English "we make watches".

I am sure they are fine. And I have a great watchmaker that can work it over if needed. Just glad Oris is transparent about it.

Nice gift! Exchange it if your not truly happy with it. I personally really like the Oris. The blue dial is fantastic and goes great with the bronze case.

My belief is that once a gift is given it belongs to the receiver not the giver, otherwise that is merely a passive/aggressive control move. I would be disappointed if a gift I gave was not really wanted, but I would prefer it be used to get something that was truly wanted, I'm not a hostage taker.

Great way to look at it. How I feel as well.

Starting to warm to the idea of using this as my bronze piece.

It is and it does. I was shocked when I saw it In the flesh for the first time. Quality is superb and the color combo is great.

Personally, I like the Oris better. I am a far cry from an expert but I have read that the bronze make up is different in the Tudor and won't develop patina as one would expect from a bronze watch.

Yes. The Tudor has a different metallurgical makeup than a lot of the bronze watches out there. There is a BB Bronze thread on here and some have started to develop a nice patina. I have a bronze pilot watch and had a bronze diver that I sold a while back. Both were the same makeup as the Oris and both patina'd very well.

That's a sick watch but if it puts you off at all I wouldn't worry about exchanging it.

Worrying me less and less the more I look at it.

I just keep walking by the box and popping it open to take a look and like it more every time.

I have 30 days, but have a feeling it is going to stay.

Wife is keeping the bag too.

It is just so much different than what she usually carries (LV monogram print) she was initially scared. But Louboutin makes a heck of a bag if anyone has a significant other looking to branch out.

I understand your hesitation, but the way you described the situation she was just guessing at what you wanted and would have no problem with you exchanging it for the Tudor. Had you been more definite about it at the time undoubtedly she would have gotten you the Tudor. She was just taking a stab at it with the information she had to work with at the time. Her heart was in the right place.

My wife always liked Coach. She knew when I bought her something from there it could be treated basically like a gift certificate. If she liked it fine. If not, go shop for what she wants and just flip my gift for it. I'd imagine your wife knows how personal your tastes are in watches and would feel the same way.

You and her should go together and both exchange your presents and have a nice dinner out. Make a date night out of it.

I would think about it for a few days and then I would go get the watch I want. If you are already thinking about two bronze watches in a collection then go get the one you originally wanted. Then you may only need one. I own the Black Bay Bronze and there is no comparing the two in my opinion. The movement alone is worth the price of admission on the Tudor. The Tudor is very sturdy and the Oris is not so much. Just hold the two side by side. To each his own.

For me, I would keep the watch. Even if it is not what I would buy for myself, I keep gifts out of respect to the gift-giver. Sometimes, it can grow on you over time
