Anyone here ever buy a barrel of Jack Daniels?
A good friend from middle school (who has been drinking Jack since then) has always wanted to buy a barrel of Jack Daniels. I offered to go in with him to get it and he can keep the barrel at his house (in the living room next to the pool table. Yes we are single, how did you guess?) I was curious if anyone here has bought one and what your experience was like. We are planning to go to the distillery, take the VIP tour, and pick our own barrel. Pretty excited!!!

Not me. Sounds interesting but isn't that a $hit load of Jack? I mean gallons...

sounds pretty cool, but 240 bottles of jack....wow! I did the tour when I was 21, hated that it is a dry county though

It's about 52 gallons or 240 bottles of 750ml single barrel Jack. My brother decided to join us, too. I did the math and it is more than I will ever drink even if I live to be 75. Most likely, I'll end up giving most of it away. One cool thing now is that you can sample the whiskey on a tour. They have different packages you can sign up for. The last time I went, none of that was available.

For 10k I'd rather have a single malt scotch collection or an entire bourbon collection. I like jack but having a barrell is more to say you did it than to actually enjoy it. Unless you run a bar or something.
That is 6086 ounces or so. You could invite 1k people and have a decent party.

Yeah, my buddy has went through well over half a barrel by himself since high school. It's a combination of both cool factor to say you did it, and having a butt load of Jack.

Other makers have the same thing I'd look for others as well.

It doesn't go bad and there isn't a set price. The number of bottles varies from barrel to barrel due to evaporation (angel's share) and the price is based on that. I'm just starting to learn all this. That's why I'm hoping someone here has done it and can tell me about their experience.

2006 was a very good year. I picked up my Corvette Convertible at the National Corvette Museum. Had a tour of the Corvette Plant, with just me and the guide from the NCM.
On the tour, I got to start, a never before started Z06, as it came off the production line. Driving it back to the left coast, I stopped at the Jack Daniels Factory. I had a great tour and stopped at the JD Shop. They could sell bottles on the property. Then I noticed someone was signing bottles. I went over to see what was going on. Jimmy Bedford, the Master Distiller was signing bottles. The bottles were half the price they were in California, so I bought a few. While he was signing them I talked to Jimmy. I guess my enthusiasm let him know what a fan I was. He told his assistant that I should be a Squire. She later told me that it usually took a while to be confirmed, she did not think it would be an issue, considering who nominated me.

I've seen what not even a fifth of jack can do to me(unfortunately other people too lol). No way I'd ever consider buying a barrel.

Wouldn't mind having the barrel for a port base but you can have the contents.

You know the barrel's not yours, right?
They fill your 200+ 750ml bottles and send them to you. http://www.jackdaniels.com/en-us/whi...k-daniels-form And from the program's FAQ: DO I GET AN ACTUAL BARREL? No, though you will receive a barrel head to commemorate your purchase. As an optional, additional purchase you may have a barrel shipped to you from our Lynchburg Hardware store.

How about fire code in your area? A container of that quantity may be regulated hazmat. Ask your home insurance agent if having 50 gallons of alcohol in your living room affects your coverage, or if you need any special fire protection systems.

Not a fire hazard since he pays extra for an empty barrel. JD doesn't ship full barrels to consumers anywhere. Once the $10,000 is paid, the filled bottles are shipped and a commemorative barrel head.

Other than getting a life time supply of a single barrel that you tasted and liked a lot, what is the novelty in having 20+ cases of Jack piled in the corner? |

I don't drink, but if I did I think I would spend the cash on something a bit more rare and exclusive. Seems you could get a lot of really cool older stuff for that kind of money.

The single barrel program means every JD bottle you will drink will always taste the same. Different barrels have subtle differences. My purveyor has done this deal more than once and he "shares" it. That's why they allow you to taste samples and they interview you for your preferences if they choose the barrel.

Aw man! You don't get the barrel? No fun in that. Having the actual barrel in a game room or something would be a great look.

240 is the max yield but if you like the subtle smokier flavor of a particular barrel, then it may yield less.

If you're already spending $10K, why not invest a few hundred more in a bespoke barrel to go with it? Find a cooper who will give you a custom copy to go with your mother lode. |
