SD4000 for me, the case looks a bit thinner than Sub-C which is better in proportion for me.

i'd stick with the 116610LN. cleaner + thinner + better looks for a sports watch compared to the SDc (IMHO).

if you have an "SD itch" to scratch, i'd look for one with lug holes.

I just sold my sd4k for a used 16520. I loved the SD, just got bored with it and its somehow decreasing value. Overall I'd have to say my favorite of the sub/seadweller line in the end is a sub no date...but mainly because it's as classic as classic gets...I actually liked the extra height of the SD however...

TLDR: Yes I regret flipping my sub for the SD4K! I should have kept both.

My first Rolex was a Sub 116610LN and it was a watch that I had coveted for years. In the beginning I adored it, loved everything about it. I read all the forums and blogs and dismissed all the usual complaints aimed at it, the maxi case is too big, the ceramic bezel is too fragile, the only sub to have is the no date, only vintage subs are worth it etc. As soon as I put it on my wrist I knew that my mind would never romp again, like the mind of God, Ok I'm exaggerating here but I really liked it!

However, as often happens with watches, the thrill soon dissipated and I started wanting another, better Rolex diver. I started to dislike the cyclops, the fatter lugs on the sub, even the glossy dial bothered me. Ridiculous as it may sound, the final straw came when I was in Ikea, wearing my sub, and saw another guy wearing a sub and I thought to myself "That guy looks like a d**k" walking around with his sub. About 10 minutes later, standing next to some cheap plastic flowers, I saw another guy wearing a sub and thought to myself, that's it, these things are as common as muck I have to get rid of it!

So I began the process of rationalizing why I needed to get a Sea-Dweller and sell my sub. Firstly they were too common, instead of showing that I was knowledgable about horology, wearing a sub was broadcasting to everyone that I knew nothing about watches. I had made the same choice millions of others make when they decide to purchase their first "good" watch.

So I simply had to have the Sea-Dweller, the fully graduated bezel, the matte dial, the increased water resistance, the divers extension, the Titanium back, drool! It called out to me from the valleys of Switzerland saying, "Come, strap me on, we will dive to great depths"

So I sold my sub and moved on, or so I thought. The thing is, even though on paper the Sea-Dweller is superior, even though it's a rarer watch, even though it separates me from the plebs with their subs and moves me up one step on the ladder to horological nirvana, I have an emotional attachment to the sub that I simply don't have to the Sea-Dweller.

Given the choice of having only one watch to wear for ever I would have to pick the sub, forget what other people think, forget that it's only water resistant to 1000 feet, forget every other watch. Keep your sub, wear it, love it. Then in the future there may come a time when you decide to get the Sea-Dweller, but in the mean time keep your sub!
Possibly the best TRF post ever!

SD4C screams - "punked out on Deepsea"

Just messing with you guys, they are both fantastic but seriously get a Sub-C first!

I have a thing for the SD-C, it is such a great watch! I was on the fence about the bezel insert being different, but learned to love it!

Slimmer Lugs
Matte-ish dial
High Crystal
HEV
Same overall look of the Sub, minus the cyclops

SD4K is the best looking modern Rolex, IMO. That being said, it is too top heavy for me. Just can't get the right fit / make it comfortable for a daily. If it fits, go for it!!!

As one who owns neither, I'd spend my money on the sd400 before I bought a sub. I don't have any dislike for the sub, but it's certainly more common. The sd4000 loses the cyclops but retains the date. Plus it's just a bit more robust. It's a win win especially if you find a deal on a used one. You can always buy or replace a sub they are all over the place.

I preferred my SD4KC to my SubC, primarily because of the case difference, particularly because of the smaller lugs on the SD. However over time, I flipped my ceramic models entirely in favor of the 5-digit reference models.

I've tried on the SD4K at the AD and it looks great but because of the stickers and not being sized correctly its really hard to tell how it wear on the wrist. It looks stunning looking straight at the watch on my wrist but "wearing" is completely different. My wrist is a bit under 7inches

I guess as one poster said you never really know how the watch will fit until it is sized

Thoughts?

Interesting to hear that even with glidelock that you still needed to get a half link to get a perfect fit.
I received the SD4K over the holidays and am i love with it! Fits perfectly once sized and looks amazing!!!

I tried on the SubC and SubC no date but couldn't quite get over the relatively
squareness of the Sub. It just looked "big"

Ironically, I also have the BLNR, which supposedly has the same case size and maxi dial as the SubC, but I don't notice the squareness of it so much. Perhaps the bi-color bezel somehow optically breaks up the "square"? No idea but I love my BLNR.

So....SD4K over the Sub for me!!

Sub C or Sea Dweller C4000? - People over the Dweller?

I see people here saying the SD4k is a "better watch"..

Movement is 3135 so not much difference there.

It can go deeper. Yes.

Are you a diver ? Do you go beyond what the Sub can take you ?

A couple of practical (not hypothetical) aspects to consider.

- Extra heft
- Extra thickness
- Extra small effort to check the date without cyclops (if you dont have "young eyes")

Those are practical things that youd have to deal with everyday.

On the other hand, with the sub youd have to slow down your daily diving to 1000 feet.

Everyone should have both. But having to choose one. Go sub and add the other later.

PS: Putting one against the other is such a torture. Cause we all here love both.

Id call it the "Sophie's Choice" thread.
