I agree, last time I was in Detroit I didn't write home about it.

Yeah, the last time I was in Detroit, the police and border patrol disappeared once the sun started to set. After walking back to the hotel from a restaurant a few blocks down the street (at night), I completely understood why they disappeared.

I spend alot of time in Detroit. Yeah its murder capital USA But the casinos are great, and safe. Alot of good ethnic foods and other eateries, mexican and greektown both never dissapoint, slowes BBQ is one of the top ranked in the nation. Theres dinner cruises on the detroit River. Plus it's hockeytown. Plenty to do out there, the image is slowly turning around. I look forward to picking up forclosed properties this year and holding until the tides change. Cant beat the prices lol

Actually, Detroit is no longer the "murder capital" of the US. I believe Baltimore, St. Louis & Chicago are all ranked worse in that category. For what's that worth

Truth is a lot has changed & is changing in the Motor City. It's certainly not a world class city yet but it's also nothing like the stereotype that most associate with "Detroit". 40 years of decline doesn't get fixed overnight but the last 10 have been a big step in the right direction. The amount of investment in the city itself is pretty remarkable from commercial & residential real estate to business, hotels, entertainment, sports, restaurants, etc... I'll bet in 10 more years a lot folks will have a different opinion. Plus the greater Detroit area itself & the suburbs are as nice as anywhere I've been in the states. PS/Disclaimer: I was born in New York but grew up Caracas, Antwerp & London so my bias isn't homegrown

I was born in Detroit and grew up in the suburbs but spent most of my young adulthood downtown. I love saying I'm from Detroit but I am scratching my head at this list as well.

I think The NY Times is doing the city a disservice by adding Detroit to the list. There are great parts to the city. But if I were to make a list of places to visit, Detroit wouldn't be on it. It's a great sports city with great music scene. If you are going there for one these, there are specific dates of the year to go. Otherwise, the average week in July would make for a boring trip and would wind up having people walk away bitching about the city than raving.

A lot of money is being invested in the city. During the bankruptcy, a mid week flight from LGA-DTW was ridiculous . Flights were full of investment banks and consultants flying to/from the city. I view Detroit as the Brooklyn of America. It has a tough reputation and tough areas but it's really just like any other major city.

While there has been a mass exodus in the last 30 years, the current population doesn't match the big city amenities. BTW- Detroit hasn't been the murder capital for a long long time.

My friend from Kazakhstan recommends going only if someone in my group speaks Russian. She thinks it's safe for locals but that foreigners (especially Americans) are walking bullseyes for various scammers

Hope is not a strategy...but I do pull for Detroit. Spent many trips there seeing GM in the '90's and loved crossing the river to Windsor. Too bad they don't mention Greenfield Village that Ford built nearby.

Most of this was pitched to readers with some big guessing going on - but I did enjoy the 360° videos.

I've been to all the US destinations except Ketchum. None rate a 7-day stay for the reasons elaborated in the articles IMHO.
I'll use Birmingham, AL as one example - they completely missed that Porsche has a vaunted driving school there at Barber Motorsports Park. That's worth 2 days. And at the same site there is a Mercedes Benz demo course + the best motorcycle museum in America (that also has more F1 Lotus on display than anywhere outside England)

I have colleagues that travel there on business. Based on what they say, I wouldn't take a holiday there.

Over the past couple of years I have been invited on numerous free media trips to KZ. Always declined. Just something about it makes me uneasy. Twenty or 30 years ago, though, I'd have gone in a heartbeat.

For those thinking of traveling to the Great Barrier Reef I'd recommend the Ningaloo reef instead.
Unlike the Great Barrier Reef it's unaffected by coral bleaching for now.

i was in dubrovnik last year. my wife and i went to prague after several days there. i regret not remaining on the dalmatian coast the entire time. it is absolutely amazing over there. beautiful landscape and water, wonderful people, and wonderful food. not surprised to see it so high on the list.

I agree on this one for sure! We will be (Kenya / Tanzania) for the great migration and Rwanda Gorilla Trekking this August.

We did Southern Africa in 2013 and loved it! Really wanted to go back.

Balloon flight is part of the plan too!

The same thing can be said for Stockholm :-) In northern Sweden, it was -40F the other day - it is at the level where the the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales collide. -40F = -40C.
