One of two incoming Dani's
The first of two incoming Dani's got here yesterday and so I got to play with it today.
It's a prototype flattop Takumi Karanuri but never went into production. I even got some pictures between rain showers. It has a fine nib that Richard Binder modified into a cursive italic. It's very nice. Between the Hanryo and regular Takumi in size. The base color is super dark green, so dark it only shows as green under direct sunlight. Almost exactly the same color as my '67 British Racing Green MGB was. There are really quite a few colors, the base BRG, a white layer, a cream or yellow layer, the blue-green layer and the woodland green layer. Last edited by jar; 8 March 2017 at 10:06 AM.. I like that!!!!
Would like to see it in person. How does it write. I still haven't broken my new Dani out. Just too busy for now, but have something to look forward to in the future. Congratulations!

Whoa! That's an interesting pen! I can see the BRG reference in there. Lots of experience with MG's over here

Interesting pen, the color scheme and design aren't my style but I can certainly see the appeal! Looks like it's a great writer too. Enjoy it!

Thanks for the sample!
I don't own a Binder nib. But have a couple I would like him to do for me. Cursive italic has to be one of my favorite cuts and I have always loved the obliques. My handwriting needs all the help it can get and both of those nibs seem to help immensely. Thanks again!

It is an interesting pen, much like the Pilot Custom 845 Vermilion in that I find it difficult to call great but oh so close. On the good side as expected from Danitrio the maki-e work is excellent. The size is the shorter format sho-hakkaku that really fits well in my pockets. But then it just misses. The nib is nice but prosaic; while the Binder CI nib in the other green Dani is simply fun and giggles to use this one is pretty much boring. Then there is the urushi. On Danis the maki-e shi also does the base urushi and sometimes the urushi is not quite up to the standards found in my Nakayas and Platinums. The pens still have that hand made individual character that sets them apart from the Sailor and Namiki products but as with this one, under certain light and in certain places like the very ends of the cap and body where it is just urushi I can see application artifacts. The urushi is great, but not perfect. And the issue I am pointing towards are really, really, really minor. This pens simply reinforces my belief that for urushi look to Nakaya and Platinum and for maki-e look to Danitrio. |

The signature is from Kogaku whose real name is Koichiro Okazaki.
Here is another of his work showing similar flowers but on a 2006 Conway Stewart offering. |
