TUMI: I Get It Now

For the longest time Tumi luggage didn't appeal to me. It seemed a little over-styled and excessively priced. The look just didn't appeal to me. Also, it seems like such an expensive piece should have a better warranty so I consistently chose Briggs and Riley.

Lately I've had the itch for a new book bag. I travel ~120 nights a year and I've been going through a new bookbag once a year. I kept hearing some of the members here on TRF going on and on about Tumi so I decided to stop by to check out their backpacks.

I was incredibly impressed with the style and functionality. Everything about it screamed quality. Every piece was well thought out. Compact but spacious where it needs to be.

I'm still not in a place where I can justify spending $500 on a backpack but consider me tempted.

You shouldn't have posted a photo! Now Paul will have to go and buy one.
If you're on the road that much, just go for it! I'm sure it will outlast all the cheaper bags.

I would also look at Briggs and Riley. I have had one of their backpacks for 10 years and it functions as new. The bag goes with me everywhere and I travel at least 60 days a year. Bullet proof. I also have a 20 year old Tumi carryon bag of my fathers and a newer one. Been happy with both. I think with B&R you get Tumi quality for a slightly lower price point and in some cases a more functional product.

Halliburton/Zero beats these guys in every department. The fact that they have been making serious luggage for world travelers and industry for 50+ years says so much more about them than just another pretty face. I have terrible warranty issues with Tumi on my wife roller bags

I do like Tumi leather goods though.

It's funny...I bought my first couple of Tumi products last October, and the more I use them the less I feel "I get it"!

I'm a fan of B&R. I have several of their cases. I love their warranty and I've had to use it at least once on each of my cases. I'm still uncertain about their backpacks though. I'm sure they're good. From the photos online they don't look very interesting.

The last suitcase I purchased was from a new company called "AWAY." It's nice case. Very well designed and really inexpensive.

Go tot he outlet and buy last year's style/color (no big diff) at 30-40% off. Then enjoy your bag.

Yeah my B&R backpack is pretty much boring as hell. It is black and looks very plain. Inside though, it has pockets, padding, and functionality second to none from others I have seen. I travel with it and cart it around town with work stuff/computer etc. When I travel, I often put a pair of shoes, light jacket/sweatshirt etc in addition to laptop, a book etc. Like I said the thing still looks and functions as if it were brand new and I have beat the crap out of it. Going on 11 years old.

I know this is not the same style as Tumi, but I've had a Tumi backpack in the past; loved it, but have since replaced it with a GoRuck for every day and for travel. They have a great warranty as well on their bags. And these GR1s scream quality. When I handle one of these then handle my very nice Tom Bihn Synapse, the GR1 just feels noticeably more rugged.

I am buying a new backpack myself... a replacement. Think I might step up to leather. I like the new Carbon Fiber but it is just not as big as the older models.

I find the Tumi backpacks great to stay organized while traveling. Good amount of zippered compartments and the TSA checkpoint friendly laptop compartment is genius. As mentioned above, any outlet center might be the right place to find deals on older or dicontinued items. To me the classic business in black ballistic is the still the way to go. As for GoRuck, I'm using the GR1 now for over a year and just love it. Much sleeker and great to carry as actual backpack. And very well made. Compartments are mostly internal and the laptop part doesn't fold out, see Tumi. While both are standout products, the application decides which one to prefer or use that outing. Much like a watch collection, a little variety doesn't hurt.

I have quite of few of briefcases and backpacks from each maker.

LV, Gucci, Tumi, Ogio.

From my experience.

Best briefcase: Tumi.
Best Travel briefcase. Practical but boring
Best backpack: Ogio
Best travel backpack: Ogio
Favorite briefcase: LV
Favorite backpack: Gucci

My daily use at the moment is an all leather Gucci.

Who knows what tomorrow will be.

The Tumi leather back pack that goes for around $600+ is really nice. I have one but never seem to use it other than when I'm traveling on vacation. I have seen it in brown, which is really nice but it does not show up in their current offerings
