Has Anyone Downsized Their Collection?

I've been considering downsizing. Has anyone gone through this process? If so please share about the process.

I believe it's:

1) Sell
2) Don't replace

Yup ..

2010 --> 1

2013 --> 2

2014 --> 3

2015 --> 2

2016 --> 1

Realized that I am not a collector ... a one (maybe two max) watch guy

Yes, gone from 6 SS down to 2 SS & 1 PM.
The feel of gold and extra weight is addictive, now thinking of what to replace the remaining SS for that would be suitable for daily wear.

Yes, it is pretty much a mass balance however that is inherently obvious.

Not necessarily but in part true. Curious about other's experience with the process. Difficulties, major hits, positive and negative experiences?

I'm lazy, and I probably (definitely) leave money on the table. But I just trade them against new purchases from sellers (not AD's). As opposed to selling them privately myself. So, I'm never adding. One in, one sometimes two out.

And I've refrained from my old habit of impulse buying affordable pieces. Squale, Seiko, Unimatic. I just never wore them when I knew there was something nicer in the box.

I'm down to (2) watches that I rotate, (1) apple watch for sport, and a couple of sentimental pieces that I'll never get rid of.

I think that snowflake is so much nicer than the new dial version.

I was actually in a GS AD, and was told a couple of ppl on the waitlist for a snowflake asked for their money back because GS would no longer be shipping the SBGA011. All shipments starting in May were the new dials (SBGA211).

I'd take either!

I really like the "just a Seiko" aspect of GS. Also, there's something weird about the triangle formed by
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGS
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGrand Seiko

It makes the dial look like a cyclops.

I have downsized and upsized so many times that I don't even pay attention. Now if I don't wear it then I sell it.

I have stopped impulse buying and selling now. I've calculated that it's cost me £4650 to date flipping watches.

I've enjoyed them all and it could have been a lot worse if I didn't employ some restraint.

Sounds obvious but, if you're a flipper, make sure you get good deals so you reduce your losses when you flip.

Here's my journey. The last picture is what remains. Notice my fiancé has started collecting recently after I bought her the Reverso pictured. I'm hoping she'll stick to shoes and handbags.

I like the BLNR but can't live with polished centre links. Your looks great on a rubber strap. Is that a Rubber B strap?

Currently at:
1- Tudor
4- Rolex

Want to be down to 3 by end of this year.
Will be tough to accomplish but that is the goal.

Cheers

I've owned over a dozen watches at once and had quite a lot brands, but now I'm down to Rolex, AP and PP and 4/5 watches.

I let go of a 16622, picked up a Breitling Avenger GMT II, and an Omega Dynamic since it needed service. I may sell the Presidential to for a down payment on a house later. I'm still undecided about it.

It is our hobby. One watch is not enough. The man needs variety.
I think 3-5 watches can be enough. I've been thinking about a downsizing.
But only one watch is just too boring. I need more. MORE!

Here's my journey:

1986 - bought TT Sub - still have it today
1998 - bought Polar EXP II - the only used watch I've ever bought
2002 - bought Cartier Roadster - it was a weak moment
2005 - bought WG DayDate - the king of the Rolex world
2006 - bought Panerai 090 Power Reserve - the only other brand that interested me
2010 - sold EXPII - spontaneous holiday flip for...
2010 - bought Milgauss GV - which I (wrongly) thought was hard to find
2013 - bought white SS Daytona - an AD called and I went for it
2014 - JOINED TRF
2014 - bought BLNR - well...I had just joined TRF!
2014 - sold Cartier Roadster - and took a bath on that one
2014 - sold Panerai - it no longer interested me
2014 - bought 42mm Polar EXP II - and love it
2014 - sold Daytona - simply never loved it
2015 - sold Day-Date - never wore it
2015 - sold Milgauss - I knew this and the previous 2 were becoming APs
2015 - sold BLNR - I couldn't live with that blue
2015 - bought AP 15400
2015 - bought AP SS Diver
2015 - bought 116710 LN - and love it
2016 - sold both APs - happy to have been there, sold for almost what I paid
2016 - bought BLRO - couldn't be happier

Me too and think 9-10 might be solid for me. Too many I don't wear enough or much at all.

Everest with tang buckle. Good deal off the TRF classifieds section. Otherwise $225 from amazon.

This is what's happened in the past year:

I'm thinking about going down to 3, but like what I have for now. The 3 on the top left will never go. Everything else is for fun.

I will keep the 116610LN, and the 116655 Rg YM, and the 116619 WG Sub.

I can only Add, not Subtract or trade
