Desktop monitor size?

I have been planning on buying a desktop for a while since my MacBook is used on my desk almost all of the time. Since Apple just refreshed the iMacs I am looking at those. However after solely using laptops for the last 10 years I am used to a 15 inch screen at most. 27" sounds more like a TV to me but the extra real estate is very appealing. Does anyone here use a 27" or larger desktop screen? If you switched from a laptop was the size overwhelming? Would you recommend it or am I better off buying the 21.5 version?

I think it depends on your space as much as anything.

I have a 21", or thereabout, and it's a good size for me, besides if I had a larger screen, I'd have to buy a larger desk, because the monitor sets sideways on my desk, so I can lean back in my desk chair and put my feet on my ottoman when I surf the internet.

I have a friend who had a large computer screen and he said his neck got tired when he used his computer, so that might be a consideration.

I use dual 24" monitors. Personally I find larger monitors to be a bit too high for me but I have no problem with the width of two 24" monitors.

If you do work a lot with pictures I suggest as large as possible.

Mac book air, because I surf from bed or my living room. I have an office desk but it is too cluttered to use the desktop models. I like their looks though.

I like to play games on my pc, I have a 21.5" screen.

I bought a 24" Dell to use with my Mac Air. I like the size both for working on photos and watching Netflix/Amazon. I don't think there's any reason to pop for the extra $$ to buy an Apple monitor.

Interesting about the neck complaints. Playing with one in the Apple Store I noticed I had to move my whole head to see the edges of the screen due to its size but didn't think anything of it.

I was planning on treating the single iMac screen in a similar way, I like how there is room for multiple windows without overlapping

I agree but my MacBook is due for replacement anyway so figured the iMac is a decent buy

I like the idea of having an external monitor with a laptop. Depending on your needs it could be anything from a MacBook Air to a Pro model and just pick a Monroe size that suits your needs. I currently use a maxed out MacBook Pro with a Eizo CG 24" monitor for photo editing. A large monitor is great for multiple windows and as an editing space with multiple palettes open. The general reason is portability, for travel, client visits and if the machine is bust it's easy to bring to a repair shop, and the monitor is good for a couple of generations of laptops.

I use triple z27 HP monitors. I make full use of the workspace, and when the screensaver comes on, each on rotates through different picture files of my underwater photographs. The 27" size of each monitor is in now way overwhelming.

You should definitely get the 27inch model. I think that's the perfect size for a monitor and the size will feel just right after you get used to it.

1 27 external on my laptop at home. Another windows machine that I built.
Really need to get a Mac for home.

At work I have 3 X 21" screens side by side.........at home I have a 15" laptop.

Depends on the working distance to the screen.

You could probably calculate the size to give you a comparable field of vision with your laptop since they are usually closer.

However, it's probably easier and more practical to go down and sit in front of a couple of different sizes..

I'm using 24"s, but if I had to replace them I could easily go up a couple of inches and be quite happy.

I got the 21" Imac to avoid the neck movements required with the bigger one. I recommend it.

This is the same setup I use and love it. I have one monitor straight in front and the second with the edge touching the first but angled towards me.

I'd say 27" is a great size, go for it.

I use a 27" Mac as well for building large docs. The larger screen makes editing a breeze and saves me a considerable amount of time.

The kids love it for their videos as well.

I did have on order a 60 inch monitor so I could view some of the huge pictures posted on forum with out trying to scroll across the page .But thankfully have cancelled it as the forum software will now not allow pictures over a certain size my prayers have been answered.Being a mod and trying to read or edit a post having to physically scroll from left to right to read the text that accompanies these huge pictures. Plus getting access to the moderation boxes which unless a mod you guys cannot see, was getting to be a real pain even on my 21 inch monitor.
