So who has a Lexus GX?

Alright, so I've looked at everything under the sun. Land Cruiser 200, Q7, GL 450, 3 series, Expeditions, Sequoias, E400 wagons....you name it.... and I finally drove a new GX. Seems to hit the sweet spot on size, capability, luxury, etc.... yeah it's a little dated....but it's also one of the last real SUV's out there and gets unimaginable reliability/quality ratings from anyone and everyone. But I'd love to know if any fellow trf'ers have any experiences.... What say you?

Can't go wrong. The GX is badged as such only in U.S. and Canada. The rest of the world knows it as the Land Cruiser 'Prado'. Top notch in all aspects except fuel consumption; that's pretty much atrocious.

Yeah.....I'm finding it hard to go wrong with something that can handle terrain in Africa, the Middle East, Australia, etc. Funny enough, I have a CRV as the commuter mobile and this would be replacing a loaded AWD Sienna as the family truckster....said minivan avgs 17mpg

Get ready to go lower in mpgs lol I would be surprised if you can get 15 without a light foot.

That aside, being a 4Runner owner I really like the GX. I nearly bought one but couldn't decide on the options. I only like the fake leather and the semi analine that comes in the top spec. I found the regular leather to feel cheap.

I'm really wanting a LX570 right now. Been looking around for a good deal on a 1 year old CPO.

What was your take on the LC 200? That's on my want list as well naturally.

So I've driven a boatload of the LC and the LX. My wife thinks the LC is too utilitarian looking for the money and thinks the dealer experience is lacking vs Lexus. I thought the LC drove very heavy and whether true or not found the LX steering to feel a little more boosted/easy. Also, the LC has a touch screen instead of the goofy Lexus mouse. If I were gonna spend that money I'd walk into a Toyota dealer, offer 75 on their land cruiser (of which they've probably sold 2 this year) and more than likely drive it home. Guy at my local Lexus dealer told me while I was driving yesterday ytd sales of the LX are in the 400 range and GX in the 1800 range. So finding a new style LX (16+) that's certified will cost you damn near msrp. I also considered a great 2015 LX, but they were still asking 70 and with the weight and old 6spd it felt no where near as spry as the GX. I'd like to find a certified loaded up (with driver support) GX if my wife likes it when she test drives...

Thanks for your take. I have driven the GX several times but never the LC or LX. Good luck on your hunt

My wife currently drives a 2016 GX460 and so far so good. No issues with servicing or reliability. Very solid truck so far.

If you want to just have a reliable car that will never go wrong on you, get the lexus. The land cruiser is also a delightful option. I'd stay away from anything german though.

Thanks folks. I am leaning toward the GX but we will see how it works out. Keep those experiences and opinions coming.

It's a car with little to no competitors.
The closest thing is the Discovery.

Why not just get an RX?

We have a 2014 GX with 50k, keeping trying to find a reason to replace it but it has had ZERO issues. Quite a boring vehicle to drive but as a vehicle just to carry kids around and go to Costco, it is great.

We're not a GX family, but my wife drives an LS 460 and I have an SC 430. We love Lexus. They are great cars that require little or no maintenance.

I have a Yukon Denali that I really like, but you seem to be looking in a different direction. I had an X5 before it. I got fed up with the poor customer service...well, here in the states anyway. I bought it US spec while I was living in Germany.

That Lexus front end though...wow, not sure what's going on there. SUV meets Predator?

Nothing major to add but I've found that land cruisers can def be bought new for under 75k and I found a some mint cpo 2016 LXs but they won't budge much off 78k.

I would be really happy if they would update the GX inside tech similar to the LX but I'm not holding my breathe. I've decided to wait to see what the 2018 model year brings at a minimum.

Well I'd like a third row (even a token one) and the GX has one of the best reputations for reliability in the lineup next to the LX. But yeah, in that price range I can't think of anything else that's comparable from a capability/reliability standpoint.

Per my Lexus dealership, 2019 should see a new GX. But what will it be? The RX is getting a 3rd row option for 2018, and the LX should be looking for a redo in 19-20. So you have a crossover on one end and a beast on the other end. So will the new one coincide with the new prado due to be released or be converted into yet another suburban sprawl cruising crossover barge? But yes I wish the 2018 model would at least see a new head-unit. I'd easily jump on board for that.

The GX is a great vehicle. Very capable offroad, if you need that, but also civil and comfortable on road with solid Lexus build quality and reliability. Only thing I can fault is the fuel economy. It can even tow if needed.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Looks like we are down to a GX or Q7. My pick vs the wife's. Low maintenance vs high. Brutish vs stylish. Suv vs crossover. We will see who wins out.

Probably go GX. Haven't had any experience with either but I have had problems with my last two German suvs (cayenne and m class) both bought new at the time and both have had a couple of minor problems that required them to be brought in for warranty repair, it's just inconvenience and strikes me that they arnt actually as reliable as they should be. I will probably go Lexus or Range Rover when the time comes to upgrade, moving away from German builds

You want reliable and you're considering a Range Rover?

Range Rover is more reliable than a cayenne. If I went for Range Rover i wouldn't actually be buying it for reliablity though to be honest a freind has recently acquired a dealership in another country and has offered me a very good discount
