My find at a Dublin antique flea market
Great day today here in Ireland. Spent a lot of it at the Dublin antique flea market. I am a (very) amateur collector of antiques and was looking for something... different. One gentleman had this sampler, signed and dated 1810 for an INCREDIBLY cheap price. I have seen samplers on line and in auctions and they usually go for several hundred dollars; I happily paid a LOT less for this one. It is faded, and has some damage but I love it. I'll do some research on the name when I get back home, now I have to get it there safely

Lovely embroidery. Painstakingly done. I hope you get it home safely, too.
Had to be a fun find.

I have a sampler story.
I went to an auction, and they had the best sampler I had ever seen. Large 24''x 36'', early and made in the USA. I figured it had to be worth $3,000. It just seemed to good to be true. So, I decided to take a close look at the threads with a loupe. I don't know what I was looking for, but I thought that I might be able to tell if the threads were new, indicating a Chinese fake. I put the loupe up to the sampler and tried to focus in on a single thread. That's when I realized...... it was a photograph, a poster. It was framed and you could not tell from a foot away. After looking at the rest of the items for sale, I went to the back of the room and was talking to another buyer that I know. Another lady I know, came up and asked "Are you going to buy that sampler?" I thought she was talking to me, but she was talking to the 2nd guy that was standing next to me. He said "Yes, that was from Ms. Xxxxx house." I turned to him and said, "That's a poster." It didn't seem to register with him. I said, "That is not a sampler, it is a poster of a sampler." He ran up there, looked at it close. He came back, "OMG, thank you." It ended up selling for $2,000. But was soon returned, after the lady, that had asked my friend if he was going to buy the sampler, told the buyer that "He better take a closer look at it." |

A. If I had not seen that it was fake that day, I am pretty sure no one would have known. B. It was not a reputable auction house. At least a good reputation. |

Awesome find. I love interesting things like this. Maybe you can find someone who could clean it up a bit for you? I don't know if that is even possible.
