Since no one mentioned this, but to me it sounds you are feeling lonely because you can't share this with anyone besides your wife and kids.

It's not easy to start over and make new friends with whom you have a 10-20-30 year old bond. I think that's the issue here.

In our country showing that you made it only gets you negative reactions from envious people. Must be the Calvinistic background. Never quite understood that. Forget old friends and move on driving what you like.

I have money. Money far beyond most in this world. My wife and I don't live like we have the means to buy much more than a decent house in a decent neighborhood. We don't drive expensive cars. Why? Quite simply because after we paid off our last house with cash on the way to where we are now, many of our blood relatives were outright insulting us for being very, very careful with money. All of them expected a hand out. For about ten years we were literal pariahhas in the family. How did we get out of it? WE LIED OUR REAR ENDS OFF. our relatives now think we do OK, but that we had to remortgage our house. When they gripe about their high mortgage payments we join in.

My daughter went through something similar with friends she thought were her closest and really down to earth. When a long term investment she and her husband made in California real estate in the bad times of 2010 paid off, and they came out with the grand sum of $100k, they lost two close friends in the aftermath.

Don't flaunt your hard earned or inherited wealth.
