Rolex Day-Date 118138 - AD Discount
Hey,
Long-time lurker here! I have finally settled on my next watch after selling my DJ last year and have decided on the Rolex Day-Date. I think the 238 on a YG bracelet will be a bit OTT here in London the majority of the time, the leather strap on the 138 is a great compromise. I cannot seem to find many on the 2nd hand market, what discounts do you think I could aim to get from an AD? Currently £16250 as per Rolex. Thanks! |

Not sure in London but I assure you that combo is one of the least popular in the dd lineup. If you can't get a discount walk.

I would aim for 20% from an AD.

Thanks for the quick replies! Someone has suggested I might get better value out of buying a 2nd hand 238 and purchasing an aftermarket strap, what do you guys think?

It will look slightly different as bracelet models don't have end links. When you put a leather strap on you get gaps at the top and bottom of the case which personally annoys me and limits my choice to leather NATO straps. Also you wont get the 18k Rolex deployant clasp you get on the 138. If you don't mind these things though you probably could save a fair bit.

I'd shoot for 25% off..........and while I have actually seen this piece at an AD here in Canada, the green strap is a non-starter for me.

I think it's really interesting that the cases are actually different from the bracelet versions. Seems like a weird thing to put extra design effort into. What's different? |

Thanks! This gives me a good gauge to work from. Quote:
Thanks! So it seems a good starting gauge is 20-25% as this is not a popular model at all. |

My local AD closed one of their branches earlier this year and had one of those big sales as a result; however since it wasn't the company closing they moved all the popular models to other branches.
This watch was one of the watches on sale and I think at 35-40 percent it remained unsold. I even think it may still be in the case at my local AD. I would try to find an AD with one in the case and take advantage of a deep discount. I don't think they would discount as much if they have to order it. Good luck! |

To me, the DayDate without the President bracelet just isn't right. Mine is about 25 years old and never seemed out of place and I am very conservative. I used to go to London monthly and saw many complete DayDates there. I would not worry about the watch being over the top. Very few people notice watches unless they are really tacky.

Go for the bracelet if you're going DD. Otherwise it'll look like you're wearing an old vintage that you lost the bracelet for!
Seriously though, you can switch it up later if anything. Even if I'm not the biggest bracelet fan, I always buy the bracelet option when there is a choice.

I assume there's a pretty substantial price difference between this watch on the bracelet and on leather? A lot less gold with the leather strap, after all. And, the leather version is less popular to begin with and therefore likely to get a bigger discount. I agree that the bracelet is one of the defining features of the watch, but if the Op's not especially taken with it then he can probably save a lot of money by not getting it. |

They can be removed, but you need to remove the bezel first. If you want the leather / gold bracelet versability buy the model on gold bracelet. That's what I did with my 18239, which has been on leather most of the time as found it is more sport looking that way, saving the gold bracelet for more formal attire Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I think that strap is kind of specific to a niche, so they may discount it more if it's been there for a while. That said, whether it's specific or not, I personally think it's utterly stunning and I wish you the greatest enjoyment in wearing it.
