Thanks.
I think I'll try that thunder shirt idea before next year.

The commotion has come to an end. Hope everyone had a nice Independence Day. I think our dogs made it.

You should try living in Spain. Out here they set off fireworks for the slightest reason and that sets the dogs off barking which in turn sets other dogs off. The Spanish think this is great and set more fireworks off half a mile away. Eventually every dog in the village is barking and the Spanish love it.

When we Brits complain, we are accused of being miserable old buggers and are told that we should buy ear plugs.

Regards

Mick

Private use of fireworks have been banned in all states in Australia for some time now. The Northern Territory however has held on the the practice for their annual Territory Day celebrations.

Combining very poorly made Chinese fireworks with a population that leads the world in per capita alcohol consumption leads to many losses of eyes and fingers and sometimes lives.

I've watched the territory day celebrations in Darwin from across the Bay. It looked like the footage I saw of Baghdad in 2003.

Every dog Ive ever had was terrified of fireworks.

Except oddly, my two now. They go about their business as though nothing is amiss.

The cats were not amused.

Nor was I trying to go to bed at a reasonable hour.

One of my dogs doesn't like thunder and lightning, but she's not too bad with the fireworks.
She just lays next to one of us and pants a bit. Thunder will have her scamper off to one of the rooms in the house without a window. She likes closets.

We live in the city limits and 1 mile from the downtown square. Yesterday someone was shooting at exploding target and the sound was ridiculous. Fireworks were nowhere near as bad as that was.

My girl was a little jumpy too. But one night a year, I think she can handle it. I think a lot of us are forgetting that we were young once and probably did all the things that we complain about now!

We have a thunder shirt, but I'm not convinced it actually helps. If I'm home I put it on her sometimes. She may pant less, but she still trembles and will go hide if it's close. It can't hurt to try though. I do wonder if it might help when we know that we aren't going to be there and know a t-storm is expected.

One of ours is scared sh*tless of fireworks. If we had her loose, she'd ran away.

my dog Blue (RIP) got a Xanax prescription for the second half of his life. Worked great! I'm sure results may vary, and while I didn't love giving him xanax it was the only thing that would calm him down.

Both my dogs can't stand thunderstorms or fireworks.

If someone is home, they'll typically hide under a table nearby. If nobody is home, they are almost always found hiding in one of the bathrooms, furthest from a window

Fireworks are illegal in our city. Very thankful for that. But even though they are illegal, some folks were still shooting them off last night. Both our current dogs do not even notice much when we have thunderstorms or the occasional fireworks. Sounds like we are very lucky. One of them does get very sick in the car. Poor dog just vomits repeatedly. Tried meds and other methods, but nothing helps. We just do not put in the car unless we have to.

Nothing against fireworks, but never really did anything for me. Seems like an odd use of resources.

I thought my ex and I might lose one last night. She has been abused in the past, lost her eyesight in both eyes and was soo stressed last night I thought this could be the straw. Thankfully with Klonopin and love she made it through.

Fireworks are illegal in NYC as well but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to curb the use on July 4th.

It sounds like a war zone from nightfall until 2-3am

Our cats went crazy (we live near the fireworks). It felt like we were under attack. Fortunately we have Ativan (like valium) to calm them down if needed.

Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. Cooked up a couple of pork butts, a low country boil, and a few other items. Had about 50 guests over for a fun little get together that was capped off with an awesome fireworks display. Our Yorkie was there. I don't know and I don't really care if fireworks scare her. She's a dog, and she can just deal with it.

My little dog never had an issue with fireworks, thunderstorms or anything like that. Nothing much phased her apart from rain. I'm guessing she was a tough little cookie because she spent time as a stray and we rescued her from the Dog's Trust. But try getting her out of the house in the rain! More chance of biting your own butt. So much for bull terriers being tough!
