Sure, resale value plays a part. As a collector I try to be aware of the potential value of a select reference. I don't consider myself a "flipper" in the traditional sence of the term, but there have been times (whether to replace with an example I consider of better quality or as part of a re-focus of my collection) I've sold a watch.
I separate that from what I consider the watch "speculator". Some of these people have had a wake up call of late as certain parts of the market are in flux right now. |

Option C: A watch that I adore and has great resale value.

Resale value is not an important consideration to me because I prefer to keep my watches. At the same time, I realize, like everyone else, that life is uncertain and often means changes you don't anticipate. In that sense, factoring in resale value is a natural consideration.

[QUOTE=JJ Irani;772566]I definitely went for A in the case of Platty.....because I knew it was going to be a keeper. The resale value on Platty is not so good, but what a beauty!!
Yes I agree 100%! I too went for the Platty despite knowing that its resale value isn't that great - I guess when something sings to you, then economic rationality may well go out the window! |

I would rephrase and say how important is the investment value rather than resale value,
although resale value as well goes hand in hand with your Rolex investment. I have been collecting Rolex watches rather than regularly saving money into an investment account...thank god, so far I am ahead by far, but only with my Rolex watches...other than a couple of Pateks, one Lange, and a few Audemars, the rest are just there for my viewing pleasure and what they represent to me (Collecting makes with Greek names such as Leonidas, Doxa, Hebdomas, Nomos, Sultana, Kairos, Milus etc.). Remember to invest in all Sport Rolex watches...you will definately come ahead, better than any investment Wall street has to offer. |

i guess im old school and just buy it because i like it. I have a co-worker who is asking me about the serial and all and when i tell him my 16710 gmt is only a Y he gives me the shit face look like its worthless..... then he shows me his Omegas and Panerais and hypes them all up. I simply smile and nod but in the back of my head i would never buy those simply because i dont like the way they look.

It is very important to me but what's more important is if I'm going to wear it and love wearing it or not.
