Customs, have a sneaky little arrangement with UK credit card companies and customs ask a very simple question - did your client spent any money in a jeweller in the last few days whilst abroad. The answer will arrive in seconds.
Wow I didn't know that customs officials had access to your credit card information.

In any case, you can spend money with a local jeweller to give gifts to your local friends and family.

Besides doubt a custom official would spend that kind of time on a basic (to general public) watch.

Customs at airports are treated as law enforcement and they have certain privileges. If they think they can collect say £1500 VAT for 5 minutes work, they most certainly will.

someone hasn't seen the reality show Border Force UK... they don't mess around. The have currency sniffing dogs that smell for those carrying excess cash for example. They are separate from drug/explosive smelling dogs. So carrying large amounts of cash to avoid using a CC is a non starter too.

Can you get away with it, odds say yes. But i would hate to be the one that lost by playing the odds as the downside risk is quite steep.

I wasn't aware of this.

So wire the money in advance?

This is one of the pooch's at the airport, he can sniff out an illegal daytona from a mile out.

Doesn’t need to be elaborate – if you go through the green channel (nothing to declare) and are stopped and asked about your watch, you will need to satisfy them that it has had VAT paid by you, the previous owner, etc.
If you can’t produce a receipt, then they can seize it and hold it until you can show when/where purchased.
The likelihood though, is very remote – but talking about such things on an openly viewable forum is rather stupid.

With regards to that’s due – VAT at 20% and Duty at 4.5%, although if the latter is less than £9, it doesn’t get collected.
