Did you know it was Pierre-Alain Blum, the grandson of the Ebel founders who actually rescued the Zenith brand during the Quartz crises of the 80s when he incorporated the legendary El Primero movement cal 400 into Ebel's Sports Chronograph classic lineup (It became Ebel's Cal 134) in 1982 ,now that's 6 years before the Rolex Daytona Ref 16520 was fitted with the El Primero 400.Unlike Ebel which kept the movement frequency at 36000 vibrations per hour ,Rolex heavily modified the El Primero calibre to its own specs,(something like a 50% change). All three personalities mentioned have the Ebel El Primero in their collection. For the powerful corporate figure and watch connoisseur, Max Busser, the humble Ebel El Primero Sports Chronograph is his holy grail. It was the first watch he bought when he became the CEO of MB&F

This is doomed hobby in terms of investment potential as millenials aren't going to put money into watches since they don't care about them...just like stamp collecting is almost dead.

The future millenial money (if they have any LOL!) will not be going towards watches and the values will drop and drop...

Just look at the secondary market now...just a minor decrease in buying in Asia due to a shift in people spending money on experiences instead of luxury goods has put the market for most luxury brands in an absolute tailspin...

Rolex, Patek and a very very select few other references are holding on...who knows how long that will last...
Respectfully disagree. I'm 33 and my brother is 23, he and his friends are into watches. He mentioned people at Harvard and Law School are into watches.

I found this to be an interesting article:

http://timeandtidewatches.com/build-...-a-low-budget/

Quote:
On some points they are unanimous: They agreed that the budget range we set – $3,000 to $12,000 – offers not only huge scope but also access to some very nice watches that possibly represented much better value than comparable modern pieces. As for what that value might be, all were adamant: Buy a watch that you love. If – big if – it turns out to be worth more in five or ten years, that’s just a bonus. Unsurprisingly, all laughed when I asked if they could recommend makes or models they thought likely to increase in value — “If we all had a crystal ball…” was followed by something along the lines of “…sitting on a yacht, not in my office”.

If I were forced to buy a watch as a safe queen investment (limited to non-Rolex and $25K) these would be my choices, not necessarily in any order;

Newer: Omega Silver Snoopy, Speedmaster Pro.

Vintage: pre-moon, original hands/correct dot-over-90 bezel, 321 calibre Speedmaster Pro or Ed White Speedmaster. Especially those with correct bracelet and papers.

Oldish: original Snoopy Speedmaster Pro.

IMO, anyway. They aren't making any more of the above, and there will always be enough people out there in love with the Moon Watch in it's manual-wind form to make those a pretty safe bet as much as any Rolex.

Well there will always be exceptions, but overall I don't have a good vibe for the future of any collectible based hobby because of lack of interest by millennials and what comes after....

It's already happened to Stamps. Will it happen to watches?

Hard to compare stamps, baseball cards, coins, etc. to luxury watches in terms of collecting. Watches are luxury items like Hermes handbags with huge marketing budgets. They will market their way into the hearts and minds of younger generations. Rolex is doing a great job with guys like Jordan Speith. Golf is gaining in popularity and rolex is right with it.

I'm a millennial and so are my friends and about half of us are really into watches. Also have some younger millennials (23-25) at my firm and they appreciate watch fine watches but are not at the income level yet to really purchase them. They have 3 or 4 nixon, fossil, etc type watches but they know Rolex, AP, Patek, etc. The bigger problem they have is paying of student debt, buying a house, etc that could prevent them from purchasing luxury items like watches.

I think watches will be strong for many many years to come. However I to think watches like AP, RM and rolex will appeal to the younger generations and companies like Patek, ALS, will have to make sportier models or fall out of favor.

If you're looking for watches straight off the AD:

AP 15202st

Some special edition Panerai models like the PAM671 (bronze blue dial) - if you can get your hands on one.

Moonwatch Speedmaster with plexiglass glass - will never go out of style, grab one at a discount at your favourite AD.

Zenith El Primero - I think this brand will experience growth in popularity in the future - grab one at a discount at your favourite AD.

Any Hublot or Breitling

Probably some small brand that has a limited run of a watch.

No, because you can't wear stamps. Style will never go out of fashion.
