It’s not hard to beat Rolex, says Apple
A collective Internet gasp went up yesterday when, once again, the Apple Watch beat most major watch companies in terms of revenue. It’s not surprising not that the Apple Watch outsold Rolex and Omega and other luxury watch makers. What is surprising is that Rolex and Omega are still fighting this losing battle.
full story below, albeit, from the perspective of techies. https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/13/it...to-beat-rolex/ link courtesy link owner. |

thank the gods rolex isn't a public company, and Wilsdorf set up the firm for success or they'd be completely distracted or taken over by now.

Apple's world view and giving the public products they "didnt know they wanted" is played out. Its like a fashion trend that looks and feels dated .

Apple is technology and should not be compare to luxury watches. It is a great product but just cannot be compared. Most of the Apple Watch buyers are not into mechanical watches. I have a 49 year old Rolex datejust that I still use up to this day it was hand me down from my dad. Can people still be using Apple 1 watch in the next 49 years?

That's like stating that Porsche as a whole should be worried about the Toyota Prius. While some people might own both vehicles, they would never be competitors to one another by someone simply shopping for a car.

This is the third thread I've seen on TRF on this article.
I still dislike Apple products, still like my real watches, still, sadly, expect that watches will face the same challenges as camera manufacturers thanks to the incideous presence of smart phone toys. |

Don't think that Rolex is fighting anything. Yes, apple is more convenient and may be cheaper but the history, look, and richness i not found in an apple watch. Sorry not sorry.

It is NOT a real watch. It's a piece of soulless, disposable technology that simply shows the time.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
What Apple sells may be a watch....but it will never be a timepiece.

Apple does not release unit sales figures , Rolex does not release unit figures. Consequently any attempts at comparing the two is pure conjecture. A cheap utilitarian suit vs a luxury suit. In either case (pun intended) estimated sale comparisons on volume or gross sales are irrelevant and meaningless. Personally I think the smart watch thing should evolve to a pocket watch, functional but out of sight. A smart watch is an extension of your cell phone. Rolex is an extension of your personality. Tim Cook has a Rolex fixation, maybe he got turned down for a Daytona C .

Ditto on the dumb article. I have two Rolex, one bought in 1972, the other 2006,and both in constant use. Can't say the same about the disposable electronic Apple phones. No pride of ownership in them.

It's a bit strange considering how close the mindsets of a lot of apple fans and Rolex fans are.
Both groups tend to be the oblivious to other brands in the same space. Both groups tend to flock to the most popular thing and rarely know anything outside that thing. Clearly generalizations, but the average apple user isn't very tech savvy in the same way that the average Rolex owner isn't a wis. A lot of kool-aid being passed around on both sides. Maybe they should compare how much revenue Apple watches bring in compared to Rolex watches. They may be selling more units, but I'd bet Rolex is making a lot more money. As far as watches go.

I still regard smartwatches as annoying and wholly unnecessary.

Not really a competition or fight there. I'm sure the people from Rolex aren't losing any sleep over that non sense.

I've said this once before, but the Rolex (or any other swiss luxury brand) X Apple Watch comparison couldn't be more apples to oranges.

It's a lot like Chevrolet saying they sell more vehicles than Harley Davidson. Apples and Oranges.

The Apple watch is nice, but I would rather wear a Rolex any day of the week over an Apple watch!!! haha

Don't see how you can compare a mechanical watch with a gadget which has 2-3 years lifespan, if some want it why not, I already hate being connected so much, not about to add an extra layer
