Disappointment about Datejust 41

Yesterday I went to an AD as I wanted to buy spontaneously a DJ41 (I thought about a TT black dial with jubilee) as I got a nice bonus and wanted to reward myself.

They didn't had it but the gold dial looked good and here it comes... it looked kinda small on my wrist!

I was comparing it to my every day watch (116610LN) and the 40mm Sub looked bigger...?

Therefore I asked the AD if this are really 41mm and he rolled his eyes and said "sir, it's even called Datejust 41".

I did some research on this forum and it looks like the Datejust 41 is not even 40mm, it's a bit more than 39mm!

I cannot express how angry I am, especially after the sentence from the AD "sir it's even called Datejust 41".

How do you think about that?
+/- 2 sec a day but than being off by that?

I think it's a great watch. If you don't like it, try something else...perhaps something a little bigger?

I have no idea what this means in your post.

As for the watch, it seems pretty simple. Not for you. Perhaps save and pray for a Sky-D. Or try to find a DJ2 which seems to be a true 41mm.

As for the dealer, that wouldn't be the first dumb thing a dealer said. Best to not get angry and let it go.

It does wear smaller as do a few Rolex models.

I'd recommend looking at a DJii. It is a true 41mm. Prices are pretty good right now too, I believe I saw Davidsw had a few with stickers still on them for around 5800.

I test drove a 2-litre Beemer 520d M-sport, loved it and placed an order right there on the spot. But then discovered that the engine displacement is only 1,995cc. How very dare they!!!! Cancelled my order straightaway.

I think the OP is asking how, when they can get the timekeeping tolerances so tight, Rolex can be so wrong on the physical dimensions....? I haven't seen the DJ41 in the flesh yet but I would find it odd if it were out by that margin, even more so considering its name. I have seen previous threads on this and am sure someone will chime in with exact measurements.

I am with you on this one. I was pretty much set on this watch myself from looking at the pictures here and some of the videos on Youtube. I also went to the nearest AD last night and while I did not get angry, I was also a bit disappointed with the size. There is no denying that the watch is beautiful in the different variations that I tried on. However, although I have a small wrist, I like larger watches and this one looked to me more like a 36mm. I am now on the waiting list for a GMT II (Batman or Black).

I agree the salesperson was rude to you. Unfortunately some ADs are snobby and I think everyone experiences that at some point and is bad for future business. Best to focus on what you want in a watch. The DJ41 does wear smaller than it's name suggests, closer to the Explorer I (39mm). As someone mentioned, perhaps the previous (larger) generation DJII would work better for you. Good luck in your watch hunt and hope it is more enjoyable. Cheers!

This thread is a good reminder that online wrist shots give an incomplete view of how a watch will actually wear on an individual’s wrist - there is no substitute for trying a piece on.

I think the smooth bezel DJ 41 wears smaller than the fluted bezel.

If it makes you feel any better, the vast majority of AD employees know very little about the actual watches they are selling. If it bugs you much, next time you're in the store mention to the rep you did some research and the DJ 41 is not a true 41mm measurement.

If you really want to blow their mind, tell them a Daytona is not 40mm. No way, no how and never has been.

Most measurements I see here are measured horizontal 9 to 3 . My understanding is Rolex measure diagonally 10 to 4 or 8 to 2. Maybe the reason for the differences of opinion.

The nice thing about the DJ41 for many people's wrist size is the more tradional sized downturned lugs and thickness . OP it would seem small after wearing a six digit sub with its super case and xtra thickness and rotating bezel.

Yep with the fluted bezel the DJ 41 wears as large, or larger in my eye than the Sub, so not sure what the issue is. As suggested look at the DJ2 if that is more for you.

While the case measurements are fairly close, the dial on the DJ is larger than the Sub. As the bezel on the Sub is wider diameter. Both features exaggerate the visual effect. The polishing of the case on the DJ reduces the visual footprint as well, but really not all that different in size than a maxi case on the Sub.

If the DJ41 does not suit your tastes, there are plenty watches in the world that will surely fulfill your needs.

I can't see how this could make you angry.

When I first tried on a 116520, I was amazed that the subdials were so hard to read.

I didn't get angry. I just crossed the Daytona off my list.

Dear all,

Thanks for your feedback. Well, I got angry because the watch is off the spec.
Therefore my note regarding the +/- 2 sec / day vs. 41mm to 39 mm.

If I pay premium, I expect premium (especially if the name is DJ 41).

Please don't get me wrong - I know that the quality of the watch itself is outstanding.

Maybe the note and "arrogance" from the AD was making it even worse.

In my case the best would be to pass the DJ41 and to buy a different timepiece but I wanted to share the outcome of my research and my experience with you ladies and gentlemen.

All of your feedback will be considered for my next purchase and is, as mentioned, highly appreciated.

This puts my mind at ease I was annoyed when they came out with a DJ41 at 41mm. I always thought 39mm would be perfect for a DJ I might have to check one out now since they wear smaller.

My thought on this. I don't see it as an "off" ... or a mistake in Rolex part. To me its just part of branding and naming their product.

A DJ41 is not 39mm. Inhav the exact watch you were looking for. It feels like it’s exactly the same size a a Sub, it’s just more thin, and the pugs are slimmer.

This wouldn't be the first time an AD employee was wrong. It's also not the first time Rolex lied about case size (Daytona, Deep Sea, Sea Dweller 43, Day Date 40, etc.)

Personally I'm glad the watch is the size it is. I was hoping when they updated this they would go with 39mm. I think if you measure the watch in various places you'd probably get many different numbers. Here is a pick of my Exp next to a DJ41. The Exp is 39mm, the DJ41 is slightly larger. So if they called this watch 39mm it would be larger than their 39mm Exp.
