Rolex Steel Daytona or New White Gold Daytona on the Oyster Flex Strap
Hi Folks,
I recently acquired the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500LN from my local AD. Then he showed me the new White Gold Daytona 116519LN on the OysterFlex band. I fell in the love with this new Daytona. Now I am trying to sell my Steel Daytona and buy the new White Gold reference. Do you think that will be a big mistake? Would the White Gold reference hold its value like I know the steel will? Thanks! Jeff |

Market for gold Daytonas will always be much smaller than for steel ones. Check out any sales venues and you'll see late model golds discounted heavily from new.

If you can capitalize on the market value of the 500 then you can hedge your downside on the WG. That said, the WG will absolutely be worth less down the road compared to the steel as a percentage of msrp.
I would make the flip anyways.

I did exactly what you’re thinking about doing. I have no regrets. I’ll take the 519 over the 500 all day, everyday. It’s a beautiful reference.
I forgot to answer your question, the SS will hold its value better than the WG.

I don’t think it’s a mistake... I like the WG a lot

This is all Chadridv's fault. I have the same feelings. Check out his post 'Incoming Daytona Grail - Mini-review & Comparison'
Personally I think the SS version will always be easier to sell, but I'm in love with the WG with that dial. Let us know what you decide to do. I'm leaning towards both! |

PM looks and feels better. If you're unhappy with the SS Daytona, then get rid of it. Personally, I don't get the hype and elevated prices on the SS. Sell it while it's hot and purchase a preowned WG.

Tough call. But the money you make on the 500 will soften the blow.
It’s not better by any means. Buts it’s definitely different. The WG version is pretty nice. For a lot of reasons. I like it a lot.

If I could find a pre-owned, I would. There are not many to come by as far as I can tell... At least not yet

It's a tough call, but if I had to choose one it'd be the WG. However, mine will coexist for the foreseeable future.

Another question. If I do go with the WG, is it something I can wear everyday? This would be a big purchase and I am looking for an everyday watch...

I don’t own either but from the pics WG without a doubt. I dig the rubber either way.
Not a huge chronograph fan but that may be the nicest Daytona that I have seen. |

Hell yes. You don't even have to worry about scratching the bracelet.

Also, it may not hold it's value quite as well as the 500, but it's still a Daytona. If going PM, doing so with a Daytona is probably the safest bet. I realize they're sales prices and not bids, but the list prices on used RG versions on Chrono24.com seem to be holding up okay. Be sure to post up a pic if you pull the trigger. |

If you can justify the premium for a dial change, rubber strap and massive depreciation then go for it.

Now, to your questions. Mistake? Define mistake. In terms of holding value? Probably. But...it all depends on which watch does it for you. Big PM fan here, so I get where you're coming from with the appeal of the WG. Value? The steel ceramic is a juggernaut in the world of watch "hotness" right now. Not much is going to compare to it. But again, if it's not making your heart flip, then find what does. |

I think the 519 is a more interesting watch. Love the silver dial and the OF. Now is a great time to sell the 500. It's more money for sure, but I think you're trading to a more premium and modern looking watch.

Weight wise, it’s probably the same as the 500. Maybe just a touch more. It’s the most comfortable watch I own. The Oysterflex allows for slight changes in my wrist size through out the day, without having to open the EZ Link.
