Why not Rolex? Doesn’t make sense
I typically don’t care what watch anyone chooses to wear, but being a person who notices such things, it baffles me that the two people below both choose not to wear a Rolex. I’m a fan of Urban Meyer and Nick Saban as leaders and highly successful people in their field and even try to instill their leadership methods in what I do in my job (I only cheer for the Buckeyes on the football field). Both men have nice suits, nice cars, and nice homes. So it really perplexes me that they don’t wear a Rolex. What makes it even stranger, is that they both wear the same $99 Fossil watch. Does anyone else notice these things or give them a second thought? What if Paul Newman hadn’t worn a Daytona? What if Steve McQueen hadn’t worn a Sub? What if they had both worn the same Timex instead? Anyway, just a random thought that’s not another Rolex supply rumor.

Because they do not care about watches?

Brace yourself...this is going to be shocking.
Some people actually don't think spending thousands of dollars on a watch is a good idea. Gasp...I know. Blasphemy. There I said it. |

People generally don’t like how much these coaches make, especially compared to professors and the presidents of the universities they work for. The football and basketball coaches are usually the highest paid. Under that scrutiny I can see why they would choose to wear an inexpensive watch, at least in public. Seems like the minority wears expensive watches.

You would think, but people that don't care about cars still drive a Merc or BMW. You don't see many millionaires driving Kias (no offense to Kia, my wife owns a Kia).

Well, wearing a Fossil never makes sense, imo. However, if they'd been wearing performance-specific, inexpensive watches like a G-Shock, I'd say they're just choosing practicality over style for their work environments, and maybe wear nicer watches off the job. In light of the Fossils, though, I'm inclined to side with those who say these guys aren't watch people.

Who cares if they wear fossils? I'm sure they have nice Rolex watches at home.

What if they were wearing AP or PP? Would you still be baffled? Or are you really puzzled that these guys opt not to wear higher-end watches, rather than specifically Rolex?

The Italian national team’s coach Antonio Conte wore a white 116520 exclusively throughout the Euro 2016. Some people don’t care about watches. George W. Bush wore a Timex throughout his presidency.

OP: Rolex watches are not the end-all, be-all. Thinking that, unless multi-millionaires like these two own a Rolex they're somehow falling short of their potential in life, is weird. It's just a watch.

He still wears one as coach of Chelsea FC.

When I drove across the German border into Basel with my dad, I only saw MB, BMW and Audi’s. I made a comment about this to my dad and he told me,” What other cars are they supposed to buy? There aren’t many other options.” The fact is that Swiss watches are not a necessity in this era they way they were 5 decades ago when you needed one if you wanted a precise watch.

What a strange thread.
It's like something an observer from a different world might think. I know plenty of people with the means to buy a Rolex, but they don't. Most don't. They just don't care. As a little side note, the most well off person I personally know, lives in an incredible home, has plenty of nice cars, but wears a citizen and I've seen him with holes in his socks during parties in his home. He is incredibly well spoken, educated, and most importantly humble, but unless you saw his house or cars, you could never guess.

Perhaps they do have a Rolex or other luxury brand watch at home and choose not to wear it during practice or games.

To start with, I think you give these guys too much credit. They’re hardly doing anything to help people or make the world a better place. A Fossil fits them well.

A Rolex, on the other hand, tells WORSE time than a Fossil (probably). We buy them because we appreciate the engineering, the prestige, the history, etc. But, I think even we'd admit that they don't do anything that a cheaper watch doesn't do just as well. Therefore, those who don't really care about watches, just need something to tell the time and look a bit sporty. |

Rolex no longer a tool watch. Only a few of us fit their profile one of them being well off and well established individuals. It is now jewlery and the market target a different one than that used many decades ago.

It is my understanding that both Meyer and Saban do the exact same thing:
They start out the year with one of every Rolex made (SS and PM), but by the time recruiting season is over, they are out of watches! (Go blue! )

There's nothing wrong with wearing a Fossil watch, regardless of one's financial status, or even one's appreciation for watches in general.
