Seller’s Profiles

Ok, don’t flame me (please) but just a short rant.
I’m in the market for a watch and I’ve been perusing the For Sale section here on TRF. As the watch I am looking for seems to be in relative short supply I look at all postings that have it, not just the Trusted Sellers.
I’m surprised when I see sellers with very little activity on our forum, and by that I mean less than 100 posts and/or just joined recently, and they include no info in their profile. Specifically, no location given as to where they are.
My thinking is that if I knew they were located within a reasonable distance to me I would consider a F2F transaction by driving to them. To add to this, some of them are asking absolutely top dollar for their product.
If for whatever reason you can’t tell me where you are upfront I’m not interested in what you’re selling.
Rant over.

I agree with this 100%, no reason for a seller to not disclose a location upfront, shouldn't even have to be asked. Anyone selling a high ticket item should be willing to meet F2F - if the seller is worried about being robbed, then they can simply meet at a local police station.

i wouldn't necessarily believe a stated location though. They could put Mars if they wanted. I would have to independently verify a lot of things before giving them money or meeting anyone and none of that would be from self supplied info. New seller, no way.

I agree with above, but for the life of me, I can only think of shady reasons someone wouldn't share a location... They list a location and then someone close by asks for a F2F, the scammer has been outed that quickly bc they obviously can't meet up - that's why when I see something like "USA" it is always a red flag off the bat to me.

Well said.

I know of all of them, one very well. The problem is the watch I’m pursuing is in limited supply. It’s really nothing special, more just popular and tends to move fast. I’ll post incomings if/when I find one at a price I can justify.

I took my location out of my profile to remain more anonymous to non members who may live in my area. Never can be too cautious. I do however always offer f2f in the northeastern US which is where I am. In fact I am right by you john lol

This for me is at the very bottom of a long list of "nice to know" information let alone the "need to know" list.

Maybe just eliminate the location altogether and replace it with IP address.

No self-reporting needed.

Considering the ease with which some members have been giving up their login details to scammers lately, I wouldn't buy from anyone other than very well-established sellers.

That’s an excellent point. The best sellers and buyers will go out of their way to verify. I get messages from other members occasionally asking if I have a phone number for member xyz etc.

It’s very important to confirm you are talking to the right person. Sadly many forget this step.

I know I’m not telling you a thing adam, just elaborating on the good point you made

Replacing the item doesn’t automatically lead to a mandatory publication. I mean that the seller can click “show IP” or not. But once they did, the server would show the IP address.

As it is, the location is not mandatory so this doesn’t change policy but it does offer accuracy.

I think it’s more important for the sellers location to be verified during the buyers due diligence process than it is for the seller to disclose their location. This day in age I can understand not wanting to publicly reveal your location to just anyone. Also, I understand if a seller would not want a F2F transaction. There’s risk there also.

At the end of the day it’s just important for all parties to verify what they need to feel comfortable. If that can’t be done than stop and move on.
