I am sure you are aware, Lacrosse, at the college level, is an extremely violent sport and I was the shortest guy on the team (by far). I took MORE then my share of hits, and even dished out a few myself. Of course, I could run a 4.5 - 40 and was 175 pounds of solid muscle, (today I am 185 pounds of loose fat and it would take me a week to run 40 yards ). Until recently, I still played hockey but to this day go running, which I guess is considered an impact sport. I have had my share of injuries, including a practically rebuilt ankle, cracked sternum, etc. But for the most part am pain free. I am not a parent, but if I were, would encourage my children to play sports, contact if they desired. The lessons learned from it, teamwork, leadership, that they WILL get hurt and bounce back from it, how to deal with victory, challenge, disappointment, loss etc. To me, these valuable lessons are worth the risk, and playing contact or impact sports does not necessarily mean you are headed for a life of pain in old age. IMHO, getting knocked flat in a Lacrosse/football/hockey contest, and knocking someone else flat is a priceless life lesson and experience. Anyway, that's just MHO (I still can't get over my legs back in 1980! I'm in the white)
great post and Pic my friend.. we are all pre destined for whatever I guess.. I loved the pic .. if there was ever a Mod candidate it is you, sir. (Then you can give Jocke infraction points at your leisure )

Oh Jocke would be SO out of here in five minutes!!!!!

I WILL say this about growing old. My first year out of college, my friends and I used to play raquetball after work, we played for two hours, took a shower and went out for the evening. Today, I play for 30 minutes and I can’t move for three days.

From a physical aspect getting old sucks. I’m not even old but can already feel the difference in physical capabilities. Other than that I’m wiser, more successful and the most important part, I have my family.

I think its a blessing. Sure the body can give up. But the mind becomes oh so wise.

I see now, I just took it for granted that you played but that sounds interesting. I just recently went back to doing something I had not done since my teens but it certainly doesn't require as much mental stimulation. Not so sure the guitar thing would be for me, but something new sounds like a good idea.

Thursday I climbed this grapefruit tree top to bottom for my friend's mom. Removed every piece of fruit. Friday I feel like someone twisted my leg at the hip.

This used to be no problem. Now I'm older. Is there a connection?

My 102 yo Mum died on Tuesday, 18 days short of 103. (broken neck of Femur)
Writing her eulogy this week, I realised that whilst she was a naturally healthy person who had never done anything to wear parts out, she also had a very positive attitude.
Even being legally blind did not dent her determination to enjoy life as much as physical limitations allowed.
Mental attitude is so important, particularly if you suffer with various afflictions.
It is hard to maintain positivity but tremendously beneficial if you can.

As I was hobbling upstairs today I thought of this thread.

I’d like to change my answer.

Getting old sucks. But I’m grateful for the opportunity.

Other then standard aches and my prostate when it flares up, I am pain free. Three out of my four grandparents lived to over 100, and although my father died in his 70s, he suffered from a terrible disease. My mom is 84 and looks/acts 20 years younger. All indications are I’ll live another 50 years...

I have no children to watch grow up and currently no life partner, so has nuts as this sounds, if I could live another 15 or 20 years pain free and give one of you family men the rest of my pain free years I’d do it.

The last bit resonates with me, I quite often see/hear about people fighting for another day more and would happily give my days to them if they wished.

I can’t guarantee the pain free days though as I’m always in pain.

Like a lot of things in life I don't like it either but what I think also does not change it. Enjoy where you are because soon enough, things will change.

Indeed, and in the middle ages life expectancy was around 30-40 so naturally children had to marry and procreate as young as 12, and some of our Queens sired future Kings at that age such as our brand's namesake, Henry Tudor, the VII, the father of the notorious VIII.

And if in 100 years time people are living to 150, that would be the equivalent of having people alive today who would have been alive during the American Civil War or Queen Victoria's husband Albert's death, just mind boggling.

Next season, one of these may be in your future.

.
As for Dan’s original question, as long as one’s mind and body remain sound then adding years can be rewarding. Alas, one or the other usually decline, bringing many to a point of despair.

Philosophically, now...

Some see this as a survival scenario - but if you can contribute to the benefit of others, the continuing story is intrinsically rewarding.

Many years ago I had the notion that reaching the “Golden Years” meant a milestone for happiness, peace and freedom from burden and stressful responsibilities. It’s like when we were children many of us believed in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, dreaming of the perfect wife in the glamorous life. As we mature, life’s realities can be sobering. Certainly that varies from person to person and is a matter of degree. Diet, exercise, sleep, money, having a purpose and being socially connected are major contributors to the quality and quantity of life. With that said, family history of good genes, imho is the major factor of how golden our golden years will be experienced.
Getting old does suck, especially since we have achieved experience and wisdom that we didn’t have at 20 or 40. “Youth is waisted on the young”.
Hopefully we have many more good days than painful ones.

My family and I enjoyed the movie with
George Burns called “18 Again”.
It’s exactly what you have described.

Being in constant pain for the past 12 years has not helped me at all....I look like im 80. It really seems like only a few years ago when I was 30 just divorced and starting over.....Being 60 years old seemed like a 100's years off....i thought i had plenty of time.....and in a instant its gone and your 60.
I retired at 49 may have something to do with it. I wanted to retire play golf, tennis, mountain bike, hike etc....but I cant even walk now. My life did not turn out like i wanted it....
