Birthday Buy?

I'm turning 21 soon in approximately 10 days. Can not decide if I want to buy a YG day date or not. I love the watch and will definitely buy it on at a later date if not now.
On a daily basis, i sport a Tag Heuer Aquaracer and a Rolex Submariner and occasionally my fathers AP Royal Oak 18k.

All prices mentioned below are in CAD.

I pretty much have 5 questions.

- How much should I pay for a used daydate yg? My budget is under 15k for which i have seen many watches but should i buy one for less or should i buy one for 15k.

- Should i pay more for box and papers or should i get one without? The guy i will be buying from is a trusted dealer and friend in Toronto. The price for the one with papers is 17500

- The normal wrist size doesn't seem to fit me, so how much should i pay for an extra link? Inherently how much do they cost??

-Bark or no bark? I seem to like to bark as well as the non bark, without any information on bark i would have to buy the non bark. Is there anything special about bark why do other people consider it good or bad ?

- lastly, How much depreciation should I be looking to incur? My dealer /friend offered to buy the watch back at 10% less than what i paid for it a year after is this a good amount of depreciation or should i be expecting less or more?

all replies are appreciated and will be throughly read. Im really going to buy the watch either way. Just need some more justification and education before.

Breath, you know way too little about Day Dates to make the purchase.

Right from the beginning it is obvious you are not up to speed with reference numbers and this is going to be a mistake.

For the DD I would do my research and find what metal, dial combination you like. I would find the best example of the watch available with box and papers for your price range. Buy the watch and enjoy.

As a 21 yr old, I'm going to say pass for now. To celebrate your birthday, I would get another "sports" type watch to go with your sub, maybe a GMT/Explorer...even a nice DJ would work.

Make the DD your grail piece and work to acquire it to cap off a successful career, investment, etc. Then you'll have had plenty of time to know what you want and you won't be constricted by something as tedious and mundane as a budget. That takes all the fun out of watch buying.

The budget Is much more for me to not get ripped off not as a cap. My dad bought his Ap for around 25k which is also something I’m looking for as an option. So if I have to go a little high I don’t mind going there either. I know I am a little inexperienced in buying rolexes. The sub I have I got as a gift so I don’t even know what the other person paid for it. I’m certain on my choice with the daydate I am not at all informed on the reference number and such. I will be buying my watch from my WatchFinder in Toronto. I’m going there today to get a better look at what the quote is going to be. I’m still lost on why people buy bark? I like it but wouldn’t be my first choice.

Could anyone also describe their perfect Rolex day date 36mm? Regarding reference number and dial style. I think I’m going to look at a 18038 with textured champagne dial. The guy quoted me 17.5 over the phone. Also quoted me 15.5 for a similar watch with barked bracelet.

Thanks for the replies guys. Truly appreciated.

I am also 21yrs old so you can listen to my advice knowing we're in the same boat. It seems you're buying a watch just to celebrate a birthday, rather than actually lusting after a watch.

At our age, we should only be buying watches that we are obsessed with, not just get a watch for the sake of it. I got my GMTIIC for my 17th, but I had had my eyes and heart set on it for at least 3-4 years knowing without a doubt it was the watch I wanted. Now, for my 22nd I will buy myself a YMII, and once again, I have known I wanted this watch for ages.

Don't buy unless you've really been desiring a specific reference for a long time...

The cautions you have received are valid. If you wish to forge ahead, reach out to a trusted seller such as Davidsw. He can not only answer your questions but also tract down what you are looking for. His rep is such that he won’t steer a newbie afoul.

Do your homework regarding dial and bracelet finish. You don’t want to get stuck with a franken watch.

There is no way I'd pay that money for a 5 digit when you can get a nice pre-owned DD40 for about 8-10k more.

Do your homework. Read about all references. Check prices, and finally make sure to buy the seller!!
Good luck

I think what people are finding odd about this is a 21 year old spending that kind of cash on a vintage DD. If you want a DD and money isn’t an issue then go buy a modern one. You would probably be the only 21 year old on the planet with a WG Bark DD if that’s what you decide on.

AFAIK, bark finished DD's have not been made in years. These would be approaching vintage status by now correct?

Sorry if this comes off as harsh, that's not my intention, just want to help a forum user avoid making a decision that they may later regret - but it seems like you haven't solidified what you want. No one can tell you what you want. I think you should wait to develop your tastes, not jump at a Day-Date in the next 10 days because it's in your price range. There are beautiful vintages and new Rolexes to be had at that price that are more appropriate for a younger wrist (beautiful vintage Explorers; ceramic Daytona at a premium; JC DSSD). As others have noted, the Day-Date is an extremely distinguished piece, one that marks a particularly productive or long career; just my 2 cents but I think it would look downright silly on someone under the age of 35, not that age should be the determinative factor.

If you are dead set on dropping ~$20k for your 21st I think a new AP would suit you much better. Be sure to try it on as they wear extremely large. Also, setting a cap does NOT prevent you from getting "ripped off." You can get ripped off at 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k, 1k.

I agree, better to buy a milestone gold DD with money you have earned from a job or one you've had for a good few years, sounds like your Dad is probably helping you buy this.

Take a step back or two and think about what you really want before dropping so much money. Setting a budget for something as grand as a DD may be a recipe for regret, it may be penny wise and pound foolish (e.g. a low price may indicate other problems with the watch, no papers, etc.)

In general you can trust the guys at Watchfinder, I've done a few deals with them and have been happy. Bring cash and haggle at the shop.

Certainly at 21, and even now at 28, I would not wear a DD, especially a yellow gold one. Too old fashioned IMO. I prefer wearing something like a SS Patek Philippe or AP - it costs just as much, if not more than a new DD but it is much more discreet and better suited to my lifestyle.

Just my opinion: no 21 year old should be wearing a Rolex. You will come off looking like a child of privilege rather than someone who is celebrating the fruits of their hard work.

Couldn't be happier. Decided to go with a Daydate 118238 with box and papers. They quoted me 22k seems to be fair price. The 40 or the 41 were a little too big for me, same goes for the SS ap. Picking it up on March 10th cant wait.

Also, I am not planning to be wearing it daily probably only for the first few weeks, and whenever I wear a suit.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll be back one day for some opinions on my next purchase.
