some frustration with buying new rolexes

so i'm starting to get a little frustrated with rolex as it seems all of the new watches i want to buy i can't actually buy. at least at the retail price.

namely, the new daytona (white or black) and the ss pepsi gmt that is coming out.

it seems you have to have a relationship with a rolex dealer to get on their preferred waiting list for one of these hot watches.

last week i called around a few rolex dealers locally here in los angeles and even out of town to see if i could get on a waiting list for the new ss pepsi. universally they indicated they were giving preferential treatment to their established customers.

so basically i have to buy a watch i don't actually want from them to be able to get a watch that i do want?

the irony is i own 4 rolexes and a tudor. it's just most of those are vintage and the one more modern one was a gift.

i just wanted to vent a little. i imagine there are probably others out there who are experiencing the same frustrations i am.

Same issues everywhere. I want to say I’m moving on or away from Rolex but it’s what I like at the moment. Pricing plus availability is turning me off the brand.

My plan was to pick up a new watch for my 35th this year but nothing that I want from Rolex is available.

This has been the situation in Europe for over a year now and when anyone wrote about it some US member would comment about secret AD vaults filled with SS sports models :)

again before someone comes in saying they have no problems getting any pieces they want and their ad have them covered....not everyone is equal in terms of capability to get that treatment. But one has a choice whether to go for another brand or be a Rolex chaser :)

unfortunately that is the issue. Being an enthusiast and a good AD customer are not the same thing. Your collection is irrelevant unless it was bought from the AD you are trying to get a hot watch from.

Its the new normal sadly.

It has been longer than that. I have some experiences from various different European markets and the queue's and nepotism to be able to buy a new SS Rolex for the retail price has been an ongoing problem for years.

If it would be a somewhat new trend I would have guessed that it would eventually die off. However, as it looks, for now, there's no sign of the system going down in any way.

Go the trusted seller route and be done with it. You’re life will be stress free, it’ll just cost ya a few extra Benjamin’s but if you want the high demand pieces it may be worth it.

Might be time to explore some other significant brands with a lot of history, innovation and tradition.

Some really fine watches out there!

Yes, I bought my last SS piece during summer 2016 and after that it has dried out.

some frustration with buying new rolexes

The surge of these type of threads since the announcement of the SS Pepsi is getting old. I think this may be a good time to buy stock in Kleenex. Every year just before Baselworld is a good time to buy. I’m sure Kleenex stock goes through the roof after Baselworld.

I like that some watches are difficult to get. I’m sure I am not the only one who feels this way.

I had a conversation yesterday with a rep from AD (reputable Rolex dealer in NY) and for e to be able to see and feel how it fits a SD James Cameron I had to set an appointment at a specific time.

I was hounded to place a deposit just in case someone put $$ down before I can see the watch. I repeatedly turn that aggressive sales pitch down.

She the promised to call me if the watch was either arriving next day and ready for me to see. Miraculously within 10 minutes the watch would be available for me to see and try out today at a specific appointment time. This was close to unbelievable. I will let you all know how it goes today... I am sure that they had the watch there and will be pushing very aggressively for me to buy it today... will see.

not everyone has a 5522 to wear into the AD. It has the power of persuasion.

This is real simple, if you have a bunch of watches already and an AD relationship then this is great for you. High value retention and preferential treatment.

If you don’t, it sucks real bad. You can’t get the watch you want and either have to buy other pieces to develop the relationship and/or pay gray market prices.

The worst is when you've spent lots of money, bought multiple pieces from the same AD and they give you the cold shoulder or screw you over. That just happened to me. So it could be worse at least, as you're not pot committed. Starting again with a new AD is difficult in this market.

...and then you remember its only a rolex and enjoy your AP, PP, and soon your FPJ.

which in retrospect makes it all the more ridiculous.

I have 2 ADs i give business to. One was a more recent addition where I bought 2 SS professional watches over the last 2 years. I asked about the Daytona the day it was announced at this AD (being a month only after buying a Sub). I was promised I'd be put on the list (they won't do by dial, just by watch with Daytona which is fine). Well 2 years later I'm still waiting. Bought another watch from them since .Heck I don't even think that list is real, just some imaginary list in the sky that you move off of and into purchase que whenever they feel like it

I think the number of these threads reflects the magnitude of this issue...

I agree, it's making it impossible for regular people to commemorate acheivements with a rolex purchase, which is what MOST people do outside this forum.

This is turning Rolex into an exclusive douchey elitist brand...and that sucks when the brand didn't use to be that way.

Yup, that's the thought I had last night. Rolexes are mass produced watches and this supply manipulation game is ridiculous given that. Some ADs have lost their integrity and business sense, and will lie, cheat and manipulate clients for their gain. Collecting Rolex has become a rat race, and I don't need to add another rat race into my life.

I think stock in Preparation H would be better with all the butt hurt around here lately.
