Ring of Fire

Ring of Fire ever present.
-----------------------

Last year, Robert Graves, a research geophysicist at the USGS, said that the Big One could be overdue by 10 years.

Living here in SF always reminds us that we could get hit at any moment. There are times I go to bed and wonder, will it happen tonight? We get a lot of little temors and when they do happen, especially at night, you wake up on guard, feel the shake increasing, then get ready for the big wave that follows. We live just a few blocks from the ocean up on this plateau that's about 200ft above sea level. It's solid rock so our shakers are always a little different than downtown. It always start off with a slight warning then bam. Anyway, we've been lucky but it's only a matter of time.

I would have to move, Laszlo, if its so eminent.

Having said that, I'm in path of hurricanes - recent Matthew, Irma.

Scary DM, hurricanes are so destructive.

My biggest fear of a major earthquake is a tsunami event like what happened in Japan. It would devastate the lower areas of SF. Los Angeles, well... that would be just horrible.

Eventually we will have a big one.

You can be prepared and take precautions but really depends on where you are when it hits. A little Luck goes along way too!

You living on a houseboat now Paul??

We have tornados in the Midwest here. And while they can strike really anywhere at anytime in the spring-fall I don’t overly worry about them.

We have a basement with several places to take cover. The weather radar has become very good at predicting paths and we have a backup generator that is ready to go that time of year.

What is interesting is that they generally seem to follow a similar pattern or path. There is (was) a farm to the northwest of us. It seems that for several years there was a tornado that passed thru that area. They built a subdivision there a couple years ago. Shockingly Mother Nature gives zero cares about the subdivision. Last year one passes right thru there and takes our several homes.

Earthquakes scare the snot out of me. Hurricanes and fires you can evacuate. But when the earth just starts shaking under your feet???

Having lived in the Bay Area my entire life, you get used to earthquakes (to varying degrees). The lack of warning is preferable for me than deciding if I should evacuate or not if a tornado or hurricane is forecasted.

This is a good reminder for me that I need to acquire a few more items for disaster prep, and check on what we do have stashed away for a "shaky" day.......

99% of homes don't have a basement in California. Not sure I'd want to hide out there in an earthquake anyway though... I've been through several over the years.
