I was quoted $15.5k for the new SS GMT Pepsi
So the title says it all.
There are a few ADs in Europe and South America with whom I have good relationships with. Usually, they provide me with watches that are hard to obtain within weeks. This one particular AD (someone I have known for a while) just called me a told me that he can have the new SS GMT Pepsi in my hands no later than July. I was extremely excited until he asked for 15.5K. When I asked why, I was told that this is within the range of the agreed AD prices in the area. I really know these guys and they have always given me excellent service and never charged a premium. Not even for the Daytona C. Is this normal? Is this becoming regular practice for some ADs now? |

In some countries they are allowed to charge what they like, altho maybe Rolex will put a stop to that too as they are clamping down on AD freedoms now so as to regulate their product better. $15.5k is a low grey estimate so actually a fair deal if you must have one now.

I think the asking price for the new gmt from grey dealers when they arrive will be $20k maybe more.

6k over sticker. Crazy
I talked to a AD in Taiwan asking about the estimated delivery date and pricing. He said they have 13 people on the list and price is not yet determined. I said "what do you mean not yet determined, Rolex shows $9250 on the website". His response was "that's a international/US suggested price". So I said "You mean you haven't decided what you want to sell it for, right?". He responded saying "we are waiting for the Rolex Taiwan MARKET price". So yes, they are waiting to find out how much premium that can charge on the watch. |

Changing a 50% premium.... Thats a little excessive. Glad the Jubilee bracelet ruins it for me.

I used to think Taiwan is a great place to buy watches because they normally automatically give you 10-15% discount. (that's before I really know about watches). Now I know that only applies to common watches like Datejust and PM models that are readily available....

If an AD ever did that to me stateside that’d be the last time I ever visited them. As far as I know, they can’t sell over MSRP here.

The more I think about this the more I wonder if this is the signal of a price increase.

I don’t understand the surprise. The ADs would be selling them under market price if they sold them for what is currently listed as suggested retail price. They should have every right to charge what they want, and consumers should have every right to buy one, or not buy one. When the demand for certain watches ebbs, you guys are the ones asking for discounts... right? It goes both ways. There is nothing sacred about MSRP.

Shame on AD’s. I get gray dealers but ADs should not be allowed to sell for over MSRP. At least here in the states they can’t.

Although I was hesitant on the price, I told him to put my name down. The AD expects 20% deposit. Which I may pay sometime next week if I decide I am okay with the price.
I have done this before so no problem with the deposit. Still slightly hesitant though. |

As others have said, it's way over MSRP but probably not far off from what grey dealers will initially offer it for. People are paying 2k over MSRP for green Submariner Dates. It's just crazy right now. If getting the piece early and soon is what is most important to you, it might not be a bad deal if you can't be assured the piece at MSRP. Me personally, I wouldn't pay a dime over MSRP and would be happy to wait. I think wait times get very inflated at many ADs. Mine has always been very realistic with me regarding availability of harder to find pieces.

That is ridiculous! You have a great relationship with that AD and they decide to charge you more because they can? Yeah I would find a new AD.

As a Professor who has studied economics, I am a fan of letting the market decide the price. In my mind, arbitrage / supply and demand should determine prices... not regulation by the private or public sectors.

I agree 100%. When folks say something should be done, they never say the thing to do is choose not to play. WE are the ones who enable this behavior. Until we stop doing this we should stop whinging about markups.

Or are you cool with companies purposely reducing the supply of an item in order to inflate prices?

Sounds to me nice enough to offer you first but selling at Grey prices as they know they can get that price possibly from some random buyer.
Stories like this is exactly why it should not be any concern to an AD if they have a seller resell for a big profit. Why is it ok for an AD to do it, but once the average joe does it so frowned on? |

I 100% agree when it relates to the secondary market. But I’m not so sure on the primary market. It’s bad for the brand image when their own authorized dealers are selling for wild prices. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’m in the never pay more than MSRP camp. I have several nice watches that I can enjoy wearing while I wait. My AD usually gets the hard to acquire pieces for me in a reasonable amount of time (less than 1 year).
