New Deepsea 1-Day Ownership Review (w/ Pics)

Last week I sold my beloved Sub Date since I knew I would eventually get a DSSD. It was hard to part w/ my Sub, but I must admit I quickly got over it after putting on my DSSD yesterday (I wasn't planning on buying this soon...but I got a great price on one and couldn't pass it up). After only one day of ownership I know I made the right call for me. Many on this forum will disagree about the merits of the DS, but I can't say enough about how it's everything (and more) of what I'm looking for in a watch...I couldn't be happier.

With one day of ownership under my belt I can honestly say I love the glidelock system more than I thought I would. Believe it or not I have used it quite a bit in the last 24 hours. Mornings have been in the upper 40's/lower 50's yet it's been breaking 90 degrees by mid day here in SoCal. It's so easy to flip the safety clip & tighten the watch in the cold morning hours when the watch is pretty loose. Then, by mid day when the heat kicks in I do the reverse and get some 'breathing room'. Sweet!!! Rolex definitely needs to get this clasp into all of their sport watch line...it really is that good.

Anyone out there like me that uses their bezel multiple times throughout the day will LOVE the new, extremely smooth action. Out of all the diver watches I've owned over the years (from numerous watch makers), this bezel is by far the best thing I've ever operated. It really does act like butter, yet extremely precise w/ zero slop.

I could go on and on, but I figured I've already written too much. For those out there that don't like the way Rolex is going w/ this watch, well, I don't really know what to say other than lets agree to disagree. I love it and can't tell you how happy I am. Cheers.

I went private, out of state. The guy bought it trying to make a buck via flip and quickly learned it wasn't going to fly in this economy...he ate some cash, but was happy to recover almost everything he spent. I got it under list & paid zero tax (that was about the only way I could 'sell' the idea to The Boss...she's still not too happy, but getting over it quickly). It was never out of the box...so I got the joy of removing all the plastic (which I personally LOVE to do...but I'll admit the DSSD set the record for the amount of plastic...it was everywhere).

Thanks to everyone else for their kind words...I really am stoked to have it on my wrist. I just purchased a Breitling Avenger Skyland Blacksteel about a month ago but now seriously thinking I'm going to sell it as I already know it will get ZERO wrist time...this DSSD is not coming off my wrist for many many months (if not years). Have a great weekend guys & gals...I'm going to celebrate!

Congrats, Moby. I have had mine for a month and state that it is an amazing watch. I agree, the Glidelock system is a marvel of engineering and is a must on all new Rolex sport watches.

Personally, it took zero time to get use to it...but then again all my other watches are between 42-45mm...so my Sub at 40mm was the smallest of the collection. I guess when you've worn watches for years that are of this size, it's kind of like riding a bike...you fall right back into the groove (plus, I've been wearing the 45mm Skyland daily for the last month). Even the thickness doesn't bother me...but again, I've worn pretty thick watches in the past...so I think it's all relative to what your know & use to.

What I can say is how I quickly adjusted to the bracelet size with regard to the taper. I had only handled the watch one other time and as others have stated, I was a little put off by the significant width taper while I handled it. But after a short period of time of actually wearing it, I can admit it actually feels & looks fine...it's really not noticeable at all to me (and I'm not just saying that because I'm a new owner...I am always brutally honest with purchases & will admit if something rubs me a little wrong).

Also (as I've heard other talk about), believe it or not the text on the ring lock isn't as noticeable in real life to the naked eye. On these forums we constantly get micro-set pictures that really pick up the detail...but in the flesh, it does seem much more subtle. Of course I would prefer they remove it, but in the end, it didn't bother me when viewing in person. Cheers.

Moby, congrats on your new SDDS, and wear it in good health.

I can honestly agree with you in regards to all aspects, especially the text on the ring lock how its subtle in person. The rehaut is unnoticeable mainly because of the domed crystal.

I also find that my Sub LV looks wafer thin compared to the SDDS and if anything the bracelet on the SUB LV feels flimsy compared to the glidelock clasp on the bigboy.

Congrats Moby. I have had mine two months and absolutely love it! As a matter of fact, I have had more people comment on it then any other watch I own (ss Daytona/GMT II/PAM/Datejust).

I think the high price and the economy have scared some folks. However, I dont expect the price of the Updated SS Sub to be too far behind when it eventually comes out. Heck, the GMT IIC is already at 7K and is not even close in comparison to the features offered by the SDDS.

I saw the SDDS in the flesh for the first time yesterday - it's a beautiful watch and does not deserve the criticism it's come under in this forum. Large and imposing, it's not for those with slim wrists, I'll grant you, but it is definitely one I would consider if I had the money. Congrats and enjoy!!

Moby...great thread and congrats on the new DSSD. I have seen the watch in person and it is big, bold and pretty damn impressive. I saw one on a guy that I was in a business meeting with and could not take my eyes off of it. It looked.....impressive.

2nd that...i ask a Rolex rep during the Mayors Rolex Show if they are coming out with a different color of Lume...they told me only on the DSSD and probably on the Milgauss...but not on the other sports models...

Congratulations on a beautiful watch! I've had my DSSD for a couple of months now and wear it alot. I agree with everything you said about it. I'm used to large watches as well, so it's not a problem to wear for me. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I am enjoying mine.
