Question: Gray market BNIB

I'm curious how BNIB Rolex (and other brand) watches end up on the gray market. Would Rolex sell directly to the gray market in the case of overproduction? Any insight would be appreciated.

Hey bro. Rolex only sells watches directly to ADs through Rolex reps. Rolex disliked it when watches end up outside its network. Fyi

from my experience the one near me gets a lot from Europe and if someone wants a specific one they call other grey dealers, or AD

People say out the backdoor of the AD, but I am somewhat skeptical (or maybe I just don't know any better). I don't see the incentive of an AD selling a stainless steel sport model to a grey dealer (even before the drop in production). Most will sell eventually. Furthermore I have been in multiple ADs who still have some discontinued pieces that have never sold. I still see black dial (non-GV) Milgausses sitting in cases. I was at an AD not long ago that still had a BNIB 5 digit Explorer II in the case.

Maybe this is more common in Europe as some of the BNIB grey pieces I have gotten have Italian booklets.

The incentive is the fact that the grey is a customer too, right? I mean the grey probably buys more watches from an AD annually than a private individual. That grey is the AD's best customer.
