Tudor Moonphase / GMT / Date - Anyone interested?

I’m in lust for the Cellini moonphase but can’t see a time when $25,000 will be free to buy one (my much-loved BLNR Batman was something I had to plan and save for; it’s about my outer limit price-wise for a watch).

I’ve always been fascinated by the moonphase complication and have a 30+ year-old Seiko quartz with a beautiful one (I’ll post a pic when I get home). But it’s the conventional moonphase window and it’s nearing the end of life, and has no water resistance whatever.

I think Rolex hit it out of the park with the stunning Cellini moonphase (though I initially didn’t like it).

But...I just can’t afford it.

Lately, I’ve been super impressed with Tudor. They have energy, momentum, and are coming up with kick-ass designs.

I’ve no idea how you’d control all these complications, but a Tudor moonphase with date would be incredible. Adding GMT would make it a must-have for me. (Okay, I’ve made it clear, a Tudor moonphase would almost certainly be a must-have for me whether it had a GMT hand or not : )

Anyone else interested in a more affordable moonphase complication?

To be honest I've never really considered a moonphase but the way they are going I'll be interested in anything Tudor bring out the near future.

They really are bringing out some fantastic pieces.

Long may it continue

It would be interesting, but I'm not sure how much of a market there is for that.

Tudor is on a major roll, that’s for sure. They’re now on my radar, and I just bought my third Rolex.

I’ve always wanted a moonphase complication and am guessing I’m in the minority.

Cellini’s moonphase is so stunning. Searching other makes, like omega, is a disappointment. Their phases are conventional and usually very small. I love how the Cellini celebrates it with its memorable, if eccentric interpretation of this most ancient complication.

That's your issue.....you're wanting a $25k watch but perusing brands such as Omega.

Do you know how many other makers out there have a moonphase (that in my opinion are 10000000x better than a Cellini). Look outside 'mainstream sport' makers when you're wanting a dress piece with a beautiful complication.

You speaka my language! I have been searching, and have found only mediocre (imo) moonphase complications.

The Cellini is stunning. The rhodium-plated meteorite is so over the top! And if I could afford it I would.

That said, the actual complication isn’t all that...complicated. My 30 year-old Seiko was $175, if I recollect correctly.

There may be other moonphase aspirants reading so if you can recommend a few references that would be much appreciated. I’ve searched high and low. Even the Seiko versions available now are mediocre and small.

So if you know of any modestly-priced moonphase watches I can look at I’d be grateful.

Thanks!

Have you considered the JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon? It's 39mm and only 9.5mm tall with what one might consider an "interesting" moon-phase movement. They're modestly priced both new and on the second-hand market.

JLC makes several lovely moonphases at very reasonable prices and the movement finishing far outclasses the Cellini.

I too have fallen for the Cellini Moonphase. I've have looked at other moon watches but honestly nothing would come close to the Moonphase. Save your money on the Cellini Moonphase its worth it. Don't waste your money on others.

This forum is amazing. No, I hadn’t looked at this watch. A quick search showed the stainless version listing for $8700. Not Tudor territory but on the right side of the 50 yard line compared to the Cellini. It’s a beauty. Thank you! I’ll be investigating.

Newbie question. I’m new to the forum (joined with my BLNR last June, 2017). Is Jlc easy to get serviced? Probably a dumb question but Rolex’s network of service centers is a draw now that I’m up to three (SS/PL YM, Rhodium YM, and BLNR, in addition to my old Seiko quartz moon phase. Can’t wait to show that to you tomorrow. I’ve always loved it.)

Meantime, thank you!!

Two less expensive options that have pleased me. A nice thing about having a large collection is that it's Ok to have some that are not as costly:

1) Seiko Spring Drive - circa 2004. Made only 200, beautiful blue dial, blue alligator strap, and neat moonphase movement. ~$3K new, don't know what they are going for in the used market.

2) Shinola Runwell Moonphase - 41mm, rose gold, brown alligator, khaki/yellowish dial. Proudly assembled in the USA (foreign parts/quartz), but happens to keep accurate times. Got this around Xmas time, on 50% off sale from Nordstroms. ~ $425. FWIW - this watch gets compliments!

Good luck

Glasshutte's PanoMaticLunar is probably one of my favorite moonphases and the price is very attractive too.

Agree - I'd go with either a Glashutte or JLC before I'd buy a Cellini, let alone a Tudor. I don't like at all the Cellini's moonphase implementation, but even if it were the same, I don't think Rolex packs the same punch in the dress watch category as they do with sports watches.

Both look incredible! Thank you!!

Shinola has a billboard over union square here in SF. I checked out their site but obviously not thoroughly enough.

I really appreciate the suggestions, pictures, and your insight.

Check out Christopher Ward, I don't have their moon phase but do have a C5. IMO - good for the price. Their moon phase looks nice in pictures, consideration to scratch the itch at a more reasonable price.

Came here to post that Rolex Cellini Moonphase is another of my grail watches.
Absolutely in love with the entire design. I have yet to find another moonphase that stands up to the same level than it. JLC is a strong second.
