Shipping from UK to Canada... duty cost?
I think I may have found a good deal on a Rolex but it is coming from the UK to Canada. I've never received a watch from UK to here and am not sure what kind of tax and duty may be added on to it. I also having a shipping address in the USA as well so does anyone know if it might be cheaper for me to receive there instead of Canada?
Seller would like to declare full value of watch so it may be around $5k! Anyone who has had this done please give me an idea what to expect... are we talking a huge charge if customs decides to open it and assess it?

Duty into Canada is very expensive on Rolex. I'm not sure of the exact ammount but on a 2000$ Breitling it was 250$ duties.

it is illegal to import a rolex into the USA.
duty will be expensive. in the UK customs is 17.5% VAT (sales tax) + 10% approx custom charge. I presume Canada might be something similar. But you might get lucky and not be charged

Duty on any watch imported to Canada is 5% of the appraised value, such as the invoice price, plus applicable PST and GST. The heavy hit luxury import tax was abolished in April 2007. Duty does not apply to items manufactured in the US or Mexico.

You could always negotiate a compromise declared value of $2,500 with liability falling your end if an insurance claim is required.

I've not paid more than just GST, which is 5%. In other provinces you may have to add PST / HST, etc. up to about 14%
As Alcan said, we are very lucky to have had the 20% luxury tax abolished. Can you imagine how expensive that would be! |

If the import duties are too big why not collect it in person, you could do it in a day.
Maybe. |

That actually sounds pretty reasonable and really what choice would I have right? The seller has agreed to put on any value I want when he sends it to me so I should be good to go... I'll keep you guys updated!
