Buying a modern Rolex w/o box and papers?
Would I be able to purchase a new box set and where from? Would the piece still be under warranty without the card and is there a way to get a replacement?

Let me just get straight to the point.
In 99.9% of situations, there’s absolutely no legitimate reason why the box and papers are completely gone, on a modern (I’m assuming 6 digit) Rolex. Much less headache and worries, just to pay a bit more and get the complete package. |

Well in this particular case it's a 2k savings from market price and coming from a reputable retail shop not a private seller. I was told the person who traded it in bought it at airport and didnt want to pay duties on the way home so he threw it out at airport.

That’s a plausible story...I’d still be skeptical. For me with a modern Rolex boxes, papers and tags are a must. Other will have different opinions.

Like I said, 99.9% of the time there is no legitimate reason. Could this be an example of the 1/100 chance? Sure. Could the watch be stolen? Sure. Just not worth it to me.
What model is this and what price are you getting? A $2k discount, if it’s SS, is almost suspiciously steep, even without box and papers. Are you comparing a used piece with wear to new MSRP, or? |

Some people just don’t care and think it’s like any other purchase they buy...do you keep the box and papers for your cellphone, TV, etc...not everyone is a WIS and keeps this type of stuff.

That’s why it makes no sense to not have the warranty card. That’s literally the thing that gives you the warranty. Box and manuals, ok sure, I can understand some people tossing it. However, no warranty card on a 6 digit, would be a hard pass for me, 100% of the time. |

I have only bought one watch without box and papers. You can get it serviced and get a card for about the same amount as the box and papers will cost you.

If the savings is big enough maybe. But when I’m spending Rolex money I want it to be perfect and pay a little more. I’m in the camp of also wanting my name on the warranty card. It may cost me more but I’m ok with that. Many say it’s just a box and the warranty eventually expires and they’re right. But this hobby is all about what makes you happy and they means different things for different people. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Have it “certified” by Rolex Service Center.

I'm willing to take the risk on no box or papers but only under two conditions:
a) it's from a trusted seller; and b) the savings are more than the cost of an RSC service. Otherwise I'm not anal about sets because I don't flip and don't care much for resale value if I can capture the value in my purchase. The box and papers do nothing for me sitting in a drawer if I can otherwise ascertain its authenticity. |

I agree, no one would toss the warranty card in the trash.

Contrary to folks on this Forum, there are literally thousands of people who buy a Rolex and leave the store with it on their wrist and take nothing else. There are also those who buy and then toss all the frivolous baggage - it's common. If you want a warranty, this will not have one; you need the card. Rolex will not issue a replacement card. But perk up, a Rolex seldom needs warranty work and should last many, many years.

Don't have to be a WIS. For many people a Rolex watch purchase is an achievement in life, and if they think the watch will be passed to the next generation they do indeed keep the box and accessories and yes in cases the original purchase invoice. Let's just say a sure sign of a fake watch is no box or papers, we have seen examples of this here on the forum time and time again. Besides, with a modern watch with 5 year warranty, who in their right mind tosses the warranty card? I am not saying in this case the watch is fake, but I would not buy without box, booklets and warranty card myself.

I agree. While I can’t imagine tossing out the box, booklets and card, I’m sure plenty of people do. Even if they don’t throw them away they likely get tossed in a corner somewhere and eventually end up getting lost. |

Thanks for laying down some common sense here. I also know some folks that toss warranty cards when you know...the warranty expires, but have kept the box. I've run into more of these folks than folks who just toss everything from the get-go.

Clear plastic little box and the card. I feel that's way more than the 0.1% you're giving these scenarios. Just saying :) |

It’s not a Platinum Daytona you’re looking at, is it?

Depends on the age of the watch

If it is stolen, bringing it to RSC for service could be problematic.

My argument was more towards not including the warranty card. I didn’t clarify in my first post, but did further down. My 99.9% figure is applicable to that, and I stand by it. What kind of person purchases something for $10k, the dealer says ‘you must have this card to keep the warranty’, and they throw it in the garbage can (as long as it’s still under warranty, and any timepiece purchased in the last 3 or so years is). Furthermore, why would you ever want a timepiece from somebody so careless?
