Daytona premium dilemma.

So I have been offered a BNIB 116500 white dial for 17,500. Having a bit of mental trouble paying this premium so I have decided to look at my other options to help make the desicion. People keep telling me to look at PM in this range, but my budget is really no more than 20k. I would def look at YG, BUT i only want a bracelet and only a sports model. Not interested in oysterflex or leather. So obviously Daytona, and sub YG are out. Also looked at 15400 AP which I can get for same price, but water resistance and not ceramic has turned me off to it, plus I don't need a dressy watch. Not interested in Sub as I already have a PO dive watch. I want an everyday, wear in pool/shower/beach and not have to worry about it. I want something that is SOMEWHAT scratch resistance i.e. ceramic. I also want something that will hold its value so if I need/want to cash out I can get my money back out. Are there any other options out there in my price range im missing??

Why not buy one of the several other Rolex options? Pretty much any Rolex is good for pool/shower/beach.

$17,500 buys two Rolex sports models with your name on the warranty cards. The Daytona is great but I'd rather have two watches than one. Don't let the hype cloud your judgment. Unless the Daytona is your grail and last/only watch that you want, consider alternatives.

They’re listed for usually 19-20 so 17.5 seems fair

It's hype. Here's a fun fact. In 1986, the Daytona on Oyster bracelet was $1175, and the stainless DateJust on Oyster bracelet was $1360.

If you want a Daytona, what is there to talk about? Other sports models will have a bit of a premium as well. No guarantee you will recoup your investment but the prices are not expected to change anytime soon unless a market correction really throws things off?

Get what you want.

You’re buying a luxury item not trying to settle for something that’s available ... imho it is ridiculous to consider anything less

Get any other Rolex such as Sub, GMT, Exp line, and then get the Speedmaster as your Chronograph

A GMT might be a good choice.

Intriguing! I guess the 1988 re-boot is when things started to change?

All things considered. A BNB white Daytona C at $17.5k is a bargain in today’s climate. They’re consistently going for more than $20k BNIB. If this is your grail, who are we to talk you out of it. Yes it’s msrp is $12.4k, but if their consistent retai price, grey or used, is nearly $20k, then it’s true price is just that.

I truly though have mixed feelings on the issue as people consistently paying those prices continue to drive demand and keep those artificial prices high. In the end, I’ve chosen to wait it out and see if my prior purchases have or will have any clout moving forward for desirable pieces at my two ADs.

I can't wait until we get back to posting

'do you like your SS Rolex' or 'thoughts on this SS model' or 'experience with your SS Rolex' instead of this constant 'will my SS Rolex hold value' or 'what is the future value of this SS Rolex'.

Where have all the actual watch people gone?

For sure? I don't have info on that one, but the stainless Lady Date was $925 in 1980.

In 1989, Daytona was $3250, stainless DateJust was $2350, SubDate was $2500, and GMT II was $2850.

OP should start a waitlist. Buying one of his other pieces and performing three of his household chores gets you to the top. I’ll politely take myself off at this point :)

17 is really good for the 500C nowadays. I'd take it if you pass. You know what, if you ever considrted getting one, you will most likely still want one even if you choose another SS reference for now.

Have you considered the 5 digit YG Sub? It fits all your criteria including cost.

I did. But the upgrades on 116618 are just going to piss me off. I really want the newer bracelet/ceramic and modern design...

This is exactly what I did (Milgauss gv and Speedmaster), and I have zero regrets. Honestly, I dont even think about the Daytona anymore, and it feels great!

Gold sub looks TEN times better as a 6 digit, this is 100% true. It gives off the jewelry vibe even in stainless, it goes hand in hand with actual gold.

I agree. With stainless subs I can see the charm of the older 5 digits and how someone could prefer them over the 6 digits. I owned a 16610 sub a while back and I loved it. When it comes to the gold subs however the 6 digits make the 5 digits look pretty bad when compared side by side.
