Wild Kingdom

So the skunks under the porch, the bat in the bedroom, the ducks in the pool.

Reasons for all so far but the ducks. Now I know why... While cleaning the pool on Sunday I had my back to the cedars that line our lot and a sudden noise and movement scared the hell out of me. A female duck took flight basically from directly behind me.

Upon further investigation (which was basically getting on my knees and looking into the bushes) I saw why the ducks keep hanging out at our place. It's not the warm hospitality, nor is it the killer back yard. They have a nest built and there are eight eggs in it.

The thing is, when these little guys hatch, they will want to swim (in the pool) and there's a good 8" drop into the water. Since they won't be able to fly, they won't be able to get back on dry land, likely exhaust themselves and drown. The last thing I want to do is fish dead ducklings from the pool.

So now to keep a keen eye out. I think I'll call Ducks Unlimited too.

What any good hearted pool owner would do, is you place a wooden plank in the pool & rest the end on the edge of your pool.
You now have a nice water slide & escape route for them.

I'm actually right next door (figuratively speaking) the Canada's Central Experimental Farm. I'm sure that has something to do with it. BTW, Ottawa is the only national capital in the world with a working farm in the city limits.

I'm thinking that wooden plank idea may be the way to go. I'm going to call Ducks Unlimited (seriously).
