Strawberry season
Well, that time of year has come again, and for the last few days we have been eating strawberries at least 2 times a day (most of the time more). They are only around for a few weeks, so you have to get them while you can!
Has anyone else been partaking in the sweet fruit? (And JJ, that qustion has nothing to do with you and your sheep! ) |

I can't wait until it's sweet corn season. Man, there are few things better than fresh really sweet corn in July/August! And when you find a source (usually a farmer selling on the road from his truck) you either get as much as you can carry, or go back as often as possible. Nothing worse than sweet corn with little or no taste. |

Sweet corn will be the next big one! We usually eat it every night when it's in season. With both the strawberries and the corn, we have a ton of farms in a few kilometer radius of our house so there are always people on the side of the road selling. I usually won't bother with the supermarkets.....who knows when it was picked.
The guys on the road side are the ones to buy from. |

Funny thats what we had for tea yesterday, quite nice tasting they were of Spanish origin. And now by offering us strawberries all year round, from as far a field as Israel, Spain, and Egypt. perhaps the supermarkets have unwittingly made strawberries less of a seasonal treat. The British strawberry seasons starts around now.But at its best July and August, one of my favourite fruits.

There's nothing like getting them right from the farm, and in my younger days I used to pick to make extra cash.......now I don't mind paying for someone else to have the sore back. |

However, most people tend to want their fruit bigger assuming it's better. History has taught me that when the peaches are big, they are generally tasteless or mediocre at best. But when the harvest presents smaller peaches, OMG they are juicy and packed with flavour. Sometimes (and Craig will be happy to read this) smaller is better. |

I live outside of the city, the berry fields are literally around the corner from me, so YES, strawberries now, raspberries soon, then wild blackberries etc.
Then only a few miles down the road are the corn fields, daily fresh corn is amazing.

We have a farm close by that sells everything from fresh flowers to homegrown friut and veggies in season. I picked up a quart of strawberries yesterday and they were delicious.
Sweet corn is also one of my favorites too. Deeeelicious. We also have farmer's markets located around where the farmers will set up a stand in a park or an area of downtown on specified days. I remember going to them with my mom when I was a kid. They usually sell out of stuff by around 1:00 pm. One of my all time favorites are zucchini flowers. You have to pick the flowers when they are open. Then you lightly bread and fry them with a little olive and garlic. They're slim pickings, but they sure are good. |
