State Farm asked me to ......
Put a tracking beacon on my car ...??? I canceled them did I make the right move? They said it was to save money ...I have been with them for only one year and have 9 cars insured with them. The one they wanted a tracking beacon on is my Nissan GTR

Only activated in case of theft or would they be tracking and recording the location constantly?

mandatory or if you agree you get a discount? Personally i wouldn't.
As if its tracking driving habits acceleration/speed etc which some do, you are asking for trouble. Its like incriminating yourself you ever have an accident. Your fault or not isnt the point but the fact that there is data means you would have to hand it over.

I'd sure give that a second thought. I see no reason for it to be mandatory.

Probably a little quick to pull the ‘cancel’ trigger.
They ‘asked’... not mandatory. As stated, ‘too big brother’ and the small discount isn’t worth it. |

They want to see how you drive, period. No is the answer, and moving companies for sure if you can lower your rate.

I did that for a year with Allstate... did not save me a penny.. I put 4K miles a year on my car and was hoping for a discount due to minimal use, compared to most.
I did not care about the big brother factor... I am the most uninteresting man in the world, by far |

Hard pass on a big brother attachment to the car. If it was mandatory I'd cancel.

Don't all these new high end cars already come with tracking from the manufacturer. Whether you pay for the concierge service or not, the manufacturer can track your car remotely. Big brother is just a phone call away.

One of the insurance companies was offering a "tracker" so to speak for you to see your driving habits, acceleration, braking etc. Don't know if they used it to adjust rates up or down or not.

Absolutely. I can connect my Autel computer to my car and read a log of everything down to what times I locked and unlocked the doors. No exaggeration. There's a disclaimer in the manual that tells you who that information belongs to....and how it will be circumvented.

I sure would, and also send my DNA to all those ancestry places. Also leave photos of my credit card online with my social security number and driver's license. My password is password, makes it easy to remember.

Those OBDII insurance trackers would ding me for decelerating too fast for a red light. I couldn't win, risk a ticket running the light or slow down too fast. I can't control the timing of the lights changing to red....
I gave it up after a year as it seemed impossible to actually save money. |

Why would they need that? To babysit you or find the car if stolen? I’d assume your GTR has one already? I’d drop them.

Spent this morning with the CEO of a major data aggregation company. If you think anything is private at this point you are delusional. The US needs to come out privacy laws but even the government is too interested in us.

The module actually monitors all data about your driving habits and usage. Many insurers are offering them so they can assess your risk factors. If your habits seem safer than the risk pool in general, your rates will be lower. This is helpful for younger drivers with hot cars. For most insured it is optional. But at times, and in some markets, underwriters can (and do) make it a requirement for some cars - and they can refuse to renew the policy if you decline. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

A tracker (like Lo-Jack) on a high theft car is to help recover it.
Data modules that tie into the cars computer (which records your actions anyway, and can be accessed by law enforcement) that transmit data somewhere are another animal.

My insurance gave me the option for 6 months. Said I can save up to 15%; so I gave it 6 months and saved 10%. Likely a bit to fast of a driver for the full 15.
