How do I know if the price is right?

For cars I can use KBB as a loose reference, but what about for watches? If I see something for sale in classified, how do I know if the asking price is reasonable (aside from seeing it sold within a few hours)?

Research...you will see highs and lows for a specific model year, just like a car, and you need to average it.

I generally look at sold prices on the eBay and retail/wholesale spreads on Bobs Watches. The real price on preowned is somewhere in between.

If it's a new watch, you can look up the MSRP on the companies site, if it is used, you can compare it to the MSRP to see the difference.
Luxury items are their own beast, the market demand for a certain watch can be more than the MSRP at times. Try to buy an Omega Speedy Tuesday, they're only available in the used market, all sold above list. The Rolex Daytona SS, new or used, all sold above MSRP unless you can get one from an AD. It depends how badly someone wants a certain watch, or how tight or loose the supply is.

From looking at hundreds of classifieds.

That one you're looking at about $12K for unworn condition. Now subtract based on year and condition.

What makes you think KBB is even close?

Only lots of data points can give you the answer you seek.

If I see an 116610lv, or a stainless skydweller, or the new Pepsi for MSRP at a Rolex boutique. Should I immediately buy, since they’re always sold on the secondary market at way above MSRP?

Ask Monty Hall.

Not at all but Bob Barker would have told you.

Some of the prices I see for BLNR's now are insane! $11.5k? $12k!? I guess if the market will tolerate it..

Yes. I’m ok with buying one and not being able to sell for more than what I paid. But if I see a Pepsi for MSRP from boutique why not flip it?
