Do you or don’t you disclose

When you’re about to buy a car with your significant other? I came across a c4 corvette for a song as it needs a trans rebuild, but it’s too clean to pass up and it’s practically a giveaway. We have a 2 car driveway and when I asked for a sport bike a few months back the answer was no. I have a place to store it and I’m likely going to get rid of my first Rolex to pay for it. Already made arrangements to get it too. I would’ve told her before but everything happened so fast so I’m not too sure what to say now. Do I just tell her before I get it or ask for forgiveness? I really don’t want to end up living in this thing haha

If you're married, then shared finances dictate that it should be a mutual decision.

If not married, you should still let her know about it, but you don't need her approval or permission

Awesome, we aren’t married yet, so I’m in the clear. I was too excited and he had a ton of callers so I made the decision and just went for it. Hopefully she likes the car

Just showed her some pictures, her response was “it’s not ugly, but it’s too 80s for me.” .... I haven’t drank in ages but tonight might be a good night too

Nice one Greg! Make it sound like a business transaction, maybe the car will appreciate one day. Sometimes, decisions need to be made on the spot and it is something you are more familiar or experienced than she is on this one, so she will understand and get over it. Pics of this car when you can!

Enjoy it! I hope it doesn’t ruin your relationship. Not a big fan of C4s other than the Grand Sport.

Forgiveness. It’s the only way. Asking. Way more energy and drama. Do a risk assessment.

I like the C4 body style, good find.

I think that the new corvettes look like they got the Firebird designers left over from the defunct Pontiac Division.

A giveaway C4 that needs a transmission rebuild.

You could have more than just one problem in the future.

If you needed to move fast then in my view it’s all good to share the details after the fact. It depends massively too if you have shared finances with your significant other. If that’s the case then you should both have a rough idea of what would or wouldn’t be ok to make an autonomous decision on.

Sounds like you got the hesitant approval. If my interpretation is correct, she isn’t happy with being asked after the fact...but she is accepting of your decision. And she will drive around in it with you..but only if you grow a mustache and chest hair.

Good luck and congrats, sounds like a great project. Post some pics when you you can.

It looks like you have at least 2 problems.

Angry "wife" and a Corvette is not a good combination.

Just look at Paul........................never mind.

Lol that might be the only thing that would upset her more. This is one of the few non profit driven decisions in my life. Will be getting pics tonight. And honestly it was the “fear of losing” the car that caused me to pounce. Usually I’m pretty composed as a pawnbroker, but this is actually something I’ve always wanted. I’m a huge LT1 fan, and have always wanted an LT1 vette, impala or Camaro. Had 0 intentions on getting one at 24, but I haven’t wrenched much in the past year other than a few brake and suspension jobs so this will be a fun weekend project to get my buddies over. Will probably be about $800 for the rebuild and 2 cases of beer for the R+R.

We have separate bank accounts, but living together we usually talk about everything. I try buying her everything she wants so I don’t feel bad about treating myself. But usually the items I buy fit in my safe, this might be a different story haha

I just googled pics of them and said someone came into the shop with one to feel her out on it. She doesn’t have a clue yet.

I’ve had pretty good luck with all the previous projects I’ve had. Tires and suspension looked good, LT1s are pretty hearty engines (my Tahoe has 300k on the original 350) I’m knocking on wood I don’t come across too many problems

RIP Pontiac, the firebird was a great design back in the day, the modern ones didn’t age as gracefully unfortunately. Living in Michigan it’s sacrilage to buy anything from anybody other than the big 3 so I’ve had my fair share of Buick’s, Oldsmobile’s, Chevys and Fords. It’s been extremely sad watching them destroy the old production plants. The old ford plant I used to pass daily is an RV lot now.

I do like the 90s c4s thought. I always wanted a birth year 94 black on red coupe with chrome rims, but for the price this 96 in silver shall do
