Asking for a discount on a watch
You’ve done your research/ went to the AD/ tried on some watches/ friendly watch talk with salesperson/ decided on the watch you want (non Rolex say) & then get to the point of price which rrp on tag .........
Interested to know how you guys ask for a discount ....... Do you ask for a cash discount Produce a print out of internet price & ask them to match Ask for their best discount Say what you want off in terms of % Interested to know how you guys approach that pivotal point of the sale ...... |

Asking for someone's "best price" is a sure way to get dismissed as a buyer to most salespeople.
Have a number you're willing to pay for the item. Take off a couple hundred dollars, and make the offer to the salesperson. "If you can do ______ then I will buy it right now." They will say yes or no, then make a counter offer. Go back and forth for a bit, you higher, he lower. Then meet in the middle. If the price is acceptable, buy it. |

I always say, what’s your best price. Then I buy it anyway. But almost always I get something off. If it’s a hot item, I don’t even ask.

I usually ask for discount even if I know it will not happen. No harm anyways.
For cases that I know discount is likely to happen, I do my homework, know what is the % that is almost guaranteed to get then ask for more. If I get more then it's a bonus if not I got a fair price anyways. This method applies to anything not only watches. |

I actually use the term “price consideration” when asking. It seems to soften the blow to the salesperson and they generally respond better

Before going in I have a target discount that I need in order to make the purchase.
When getting to this point, I ask what they can do on the price, making sure I am sensitive to how loud or discrete I am when asking depending on how many customers are around. Whatever they say, I ask what they can do if it’s all cash. If it’s below my target, I say I understand their perspective but blah blah blah reasons I really feel most comfortable at X price. Also emphasizing I’m local (if it’s true) and want to give them future business to make them more comfortable. Basically giving them different opportunities not to just say “no sorry can’t do anything.” I’ve had that response and I thank them for their time and walk out. Of course that last part only works if there are various dealers in town. |

I have a number in mind before I walk in to buy. Doesn’t have to hit it on the nose. Last watch I bought was for my wife and I wanted 10.2 but he came back with 10.6 shipped out of state but I have to pay for FedEx. I countered with 10.5 shipped and he agreed to it. Watch retail was 11.9. This was a Rolex Boutique store as well.

Buying from a local AD, I point out that I have bought watches (and jewelry) from them previously and would appreciate that they take that into consideration. Then I wait while the rep checks with the manager (if not speaking to the manager).
Rolex has put the clamps down on AD's as it relates to SS Professional models--it wouldn't insult me if they couldn't move on price these days. But they will throw in a watch winder or some consideration in my experience if they can't offer a discount. Got a call from an AD on a DJ41 yesterday, and they are willing to make a minor concession. Problem is that I am now more interested in a OP39mm. Have gotten some consideration with each purchase I have made on my three watches. But I don't strong-arm them. If their pricing doesn't work, I just walk away on that day.

I know what I can buy one for from a trusted seller or gray market dealer/website. I add a little bit to that as I find value in shopping local and being able to touch/try on a watch in person.
I make the AD a reasonable offer and we dicker from there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Letting them know you’re looking to buy today helps, but don’t come across as being desperate to buy.
For best results the AD needs to feel that the only way to secure that sale is to make an offer. Of course for high demand pieces don’t even ask, as they can shift those 10x a day without problem. It might also be that cash or debit card payment will allow for some more wriggle room. If you know you can get it for less elsewhere then be prepared to walk away too unless paying the premium is worth it for other reasons.

Get a business card from another AD & write the model # of the watch along with the preferred or maximum price you are willing to pay on the back of it. Briefly mention and/or show the card to your salesperson and proceed from there. Be reasonable when it comes to establishing your preferred or best price.
Worked for me. |

I always offer to pay more than the ask. And guess what, I always walk away with what I want.
For instance, the other day while getting groceries, my total came to $125.84. I asked if they would accept $150. They agreed. WINNING! |

I always do as much research as possible firs so I know what’s realistic. I find knowin that and setting a maximum in your mind hat you’ll pay makes it easier to negotiate. Just be upfront and say you’ve had a look imo prices and ask wha they can do it for. Then say you’ve seen it cheaper online/another store etc. Then tell them. Worst thing they can say is ‘no’ and guess what? No one ever says ‘no’. They’ll say ‘I cant’ or ‘I’m not allowed’ or something but never actually ‘no’.
It’s funny as people are worried about someone saying ‘no’ and people don’t actually use that word. |
