just landed a job as a junior financial analyst in NYC! is a rolex too flashy?

So I just got a job as a JFA in a digital marketing section of an advertising agency in the city. This is an entry level position where I'll be reporting to a team of financial analysts and my boss, the VP of finance for the east coast. When I interviewed, I took note that the VP was wearing an apple watch; par for the course in digital marketing. The office is very casual. Open office layout, casual dress code with sneakers and OCBD shirts without ties or top buttons buttoned. My first day is monday and I'm thinking about if I should wear the sub or not. First impressions are everything, right? Not that I received this watch to hide it.. I've been wearing it with pride almost every single day around friends and family and it seems like nobody really cares but I'm not sure if the sub will project a certain image of me to my team and my superiors if they lean towards smart watches or those cheap quartz fashion ones. The few times I haven't worn this watch (going to a mall in queens, interviewing with the company, working as delivery driver), I felt lost. I'm so used to checking my wrist now and seeing the piece I worked so hard for. Every glance reminds me of all the hard work I put in to get this. blah..

TL;DR entry level job in finance. first day is monday. do I wear the sub or leave it home

Leave it home. Buy a cheaper Apple watch than the one the VP wears, and say nothing. Down the road you can introduce the Sub if you get promoted.

I say don't wear it on your first day, for people who don't know or care about watches...That's fine..But since you are in NYC, I am sure some of your colleague will notice and they may say something which may not be in your best interest....

For the first few weeks, it would be best to fly under the radar.

I def think assess the situation, people always like to find things to pick at, it’s a sad world where people aren’t necessarily happy for you.

+1. You already have the job, the bosses know how much you make. It’s not a big secret. Likely that nobody will notice or care anyway. Congrats on the new gig!

Sounds like the watch is going to be a distraction for you. I'd leave it at home for now and focus on making a good impression without it. Rolexryan is not a nickname you want at work

100% agree with this. Not saying to be beta and hide what you're proud of wearing. However, get a feel for the place first before wearing something that can obviously catch attention. Last thing you need is giving people ammunition to start talking behind your back so early on. You may quickly find some of the people you'll be working close with are petty about things like this. Ideally, they won't be and you can start comfortably wearing your Sub.

You're in a junior role and you want to start off on the right foot. Last thing you want is to be thinking at work if others are taking notice to something on your wrist. If you're here posting about it, your gut is telling you not to wear it on the first day.

Congrats on the job and good luck on your first day next week!

Does anyone care what watch you wear? If they are financial analysts I am sure they have more important things to think about.

Is the Rolex your only watch? Wear something else for the first couple of weeks. No need to be flashy ( if that is how you feel wearing it) until you settle in.

You want to make a name around the office for your ideas and production, not for what is on your wrist. Wearing the Sub may come across as being pretentious... the very last thing you want to do on your first day. I would wear the smartwatch.

I say wear it. It may trigger some friendly talks about watches. You can always say it was your graduation gift from your parents or something similar. If it only watch, but if not and you will appear with many others, then I suggest you keep low key in the start

SS sub = no one will care
TT sub = you have money or some who has money gave it to you
SG sub = why are you working here?

I'd wait and check out the sitch first, get a feel for who cares about watches and if there is any hierarchy, but what I would say is the landscape has changed in the last year with so many more Rolexes being bought by those doing well and aspiring, so it would not be quite the statement it was two years ago.

I would leave it at home and use this as an chance to pick up a nice Seiko diver as an alternative. Find out what is going on with the job and begin to figure out the culture. As time goes by and you are established then no big deal.

The Apple Watch is not always an indicator of someone’s passion for watches. Be yourself, it’s NYC.

I work at a large name global ad agency and rarely see nice watches. The SVP of my group wears an Exp II and head of finance wears Cartier Tank. The company provides a DJ after 15 years and a few lifers sport those. Other than that I only see apple watches. I would wait and ease into it based on your surroundings. Also, I’m a firm believer that everyone notices, but just doesn’t say anything...

It’s NYC wear the sub.

I am in IB in Cleveland and the CEO is the only other one with a Rolex. I wear it.

To be honest, no one really cares. Response can always be graduation gift.

The Sub adds nothing to your new surroundings. I’d skip it until you get the lay of the land. In some offices it sends more false signals about the wearer than beneficial ones.

The Apple Watch or smartwatch of your choice works better IMHO. Not just because the VP has one, but for the reason you can keep your phone pocketed and still keep track of appointments, reminders and texts.

Good luck on your first day!
