Trade for 116520 or keep my 1016?

Hello guys,

As you probably know I own a 1016 and 14060. Now I have arrived to a decision point when I have the opportunity to trade my R series 1016 (no b&p) for a 116520 (box) from 2004.

Here’s a photo of each.

Normally I buy a watch for both investment and pleasure. In this particular case I’m bit more inclined towards value appreciation concerns. I know that a 1016 is already a vintage model thus probably great value. On the other side though you have the Daytona a much more sought after model which happens to be discontinued too. So which one guys?

Looking forward to know your opinions on this trade scenario.

Thank you

Great choice, I would go for the 116520 which is no longer in production and prices are increasing, Very strong and robust movement. The Daytona reference are very sought after pieces.

You’ve also described the 1016.

No way I'm trading that 1016, it is (in my opinion) the greatest Rolex reference ever made. It is perfection

Correct.

As much as I adore the 116520 I’d take the 1016 for its simplicity and elegance, especially one which appears to be in such good condition.

A straight trade probably worth it on paper at today’s values but... sometimes logic doesn’t always win out.

I'd have a really hard time giving up that 1016. This is a tough one where "better to add than sell" comes to mind but I am guessing is not feasible here. If I had to give up one for the other, I likely wouldn't.

How often do 1016's come up in that condition?
I like both but the watch of Ian Fleming has a great attraction. It's a crass, imho, suggestion but I would hold and save for the Daytona as they will be available where as the 1016 is a rarer bird if I'm right.

Depends on your personality at the end of the day. These are night and day watches...

The Daytona is blingy and it stands out while the 1016 Explorer is about as subtle as you can possibly get from a Rolex.

I'd probably keep the 1016. It would be incredibly difficult to replace.

Out of curiosity, why not flip the 14060 and add some funds to purchase the 116520? That way you'd have one modern and one vintage.

Yea well don’t throw rocks at me, but I find my 14060 to be the perfect watch. It’s the typical GADA watch as ppl like to call today a tool watch

I know that eventually I’m gonna sell the 1016, the question might be rephrased like this: should I do this trade or wait and sell later down the road in hope of more profit?

Thanks for the input so far. I might keep it for a straight out sell later. I was just thinking along the lines of increasing value of 116520s, altho this might very well be true for 1016s as well.

I would NEVER sell a 1016, especially not if it looks as good as that one.

that 1016 would be very difficult to find again if you missed it.. as much as I would prefer to wear the Daytona more, I also would not part with the 1016 for it... also the daytona only comes with box and no papers? Thats almost the same as no box or papers to me.. papers is what is important.. if you love that Daytona as well, maybe try to add it somehow? Good luck!

I love the Daytona but that’s a cool 1016. Hard to find . Daytona easier to find with box and papers..
hard decision to make ??
Thinking keep the 1016
Good luck !!!
