For discussion purposes only:

Two Rolex GMT II (or Sub), one SS, one TT.
Both same year, like condition etc.

Which is worth more in 2 years or 5 years or even 20 on the open market?
Does the gold add value or devalue? MSRP is higher for TT, Does it maintain its value % over the SS or will SS ever completely overcome?
Which will sell faster (larger market) and why?

Please explain.

From what I've seen, the SS models retain their value more than the TT models. No explanation why, perhaps someone else may have information.

Except for SS/Plt yachtmaster, I would go for a used one!

When having an old Heuer serviced locally the shop owner noticed my SS Sub and asked if I wanted to put it on consignment as it would sell quickly. I declined, but asked him what types of Rolex watches he was looking for used and he ticked off all the stainless sport models. I asked him about TT and gold and he said that gold and TT dress watches sell, but he cannot find buyers for TT sport watches, except rarely. This is not a Rolex AD, just an average jewelry store.

I suppose, if what he says holds true, and the resales market is smaller than for SS that would explain some of the prices we see for TT subs and the like.

I would say that, apart from the Daytona, a Rolex SS and TT watch tend to command similar values to each other when used.

The problem is that the TT costs significantly more to start with and the SS versions tend to be easier to find a buyer, new and used.

The TT will be worth more but my experience is you pay $2k extra for it and only get $1k of that back at sale. I've had no problems with good offers when I've considered selling my TT, so I don't think their more difficult to sell.

SS Daytonas, and just SS Daytonas, command more in used market than TTs for the same reason they command more in the grey market -- scarcity.

If you buy both new in the GM the resale spread probably wouldn't be that great because you would have paid $3K more new for the SS than you would at an AD and $1500 less for a TT than you would have at the AD (current SL prices).
