Starting a collection

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum. I'm interested in starting a collection, but dont have a lot of knowledge when it comes to rolex's. I own a submariner that belonged to my father, and just found out it is a red submariner, and would like to start adding to that. My question to you is what watch would you buy that you feel would be the best investment for the future, as well as being able to enjoy it the whole time you own it? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

If you get a chance, I’d recommend going to an AD or gray dealer to try on a bunch of different references

no right way to start a Rolex collection except one way. buy a Rolex that you like.

Well, you will never be able to predict something like a red sub, so just buy what you like, keep it in good working order, and see what happens?

FWIW, I think an explorer 1 or DJ makes for a good companion to a sub date. Maybe a speedmaster.

Best investment? Not a watch. But if you want to get a watch with least chance of depreciation I’d say any ss daytona.

They are classic but overpriced in my opinion, look dated to some and, have terrible resale value. If this is the start of OPs collection then his/her tastes are bound to change and I would hate to see them flip the Datejust shortly thereafter and regret the investment. I'm just speaking from personal experience here, maybe OP will love a Datejust but I regretted it.

I appreciate the feed back, and look forward to more. From the brief searching I've done I really like the "hulk" submariner, and the milgauss. I'm going to look into the other models mentioned here

A watch as an investment? Buy it because you like it.

That being said, I'm not sure about investing in the latest line of GMT's either. If Rolex changes the bezel typeface to the 50's style, you're screwed. Bottom line, nothing is guaranteed.

Have you considered something with precious metal? Whether the look your going for is more dress or sport then there are plenty of options that will complement your ss sub nicely.

You tell him not to buy a datejust, because he’ll lose money on it, then literally guide him towards the best way to lose money on resale. A pm Rolex.

I own pm Rolex, SS and 2 tone. I’d put this datejust up against any of them.

Fair enough. The name of the game is to enjoy your watch, whatever reference that turns your crank. Your point is another side to a tough decision for the OP.

If you're ok with the size, I'd say 126600 SD43. Would be like the modern/updated version of your red sub. Cute combo with the sexy red text bits!

I don't know whether or not OP is concerned with resale value so I simply just shared my opinion and personal experience. If OP is not concerned about resale then I still stand by my suggestion that PM watches look wonderful and could add some contrast to his collection

Just a side note. If you ever need to service that Red Sub, ask some questions here about doing that. You wouldn't want Rolex replacing any bezels, dials, ect. on that vintage time piece!

Very good advice here. Do your homework before letting anyone touch that Sub. As to your question, I’d consider a daytona, as others have suggested (probably white dial for some contrast to your sub). And don’t worry about others’ criticism of your “best investment” question — for some reason, people get a bee in their bonnet here over the word “investment,” as if everyone uses it the same way. I take it to mean that you’re looking for a watch that has solid value retention and the possibility of appreciation. The Daytona is a good choice if thay’s a fair characterization of your preference. And while “buy what you like” is rarely a wrong way to go, it *can* lead to losing money. It doesn’t matter how much I like the look of a watch; if I buy it for $10k and it’s worth $5k in two years, I’m going to like it a whole lot less. I suppose some people here just chalk that up to the cost of the hobby. That’s not the way I view it.

Thanks for all the great advice. My submariner braclet is pretty stretched out and has seen better days. Is that something to look at getting fixed? I've read that Micheal c young is the person to talk to.

Buy what you like, Try them on, do some research. Your taste may change over time but dont let current or potential resale value influence your decisions as they can always change. Just enjoy the watches for what they are.

I would disagree. Datejust are my favorite of the Rolex lines. I have had a total of three datejust's but now only have two.



And this one I purchased 3 weeks ago.



I use them both as my everyday beaters and to me they are perfect for any occasion

However everyone have their own taste so try on different types and see what you like the best.

Echoing other posts to try and forget the "investment" piece of it. Most SS Rolexes will hold value decently - you may take a small hit. Daytona is definitely the exception, however good luck finding one of those at retail.

A DJII would complement the Sub (awesome piece, btw) well. A 5-digit GMT pepsi would as well. If you want to go outside of Rolex, I agree with the Speedmaster recommendation. Classic.
