Past 3 Rolexes, is it joy of wearing or owning?

Late Saturday thoughts!
Past your third valuable watch, does it become a matter of the joy of owning a nice piece or does each watch serve an attire purpose?

To me I think it’s the joy of owning them especially if they’re hard to Get ones. To me the SD43, subD, GMT LN......etc All look similar to the untrained eye, but to its owner they serve that special purpose.

What’s the joy you get from your watches if you own more than three?

I own way more than 3 and I don't really get any joy from that.

They take up space, there is a risk that they will be damaged/stolen and they may need maintenance.

Would i enjoy owning hard to get watches? No, why ever would I? they would only make my life more complicated.

I enjoy the watch I wear. If I was a collector I might think differently, but I am not. I have what is by most accounts an easy and luxurious life. I can afford to do things such as travel and eat good food. One of the reasons for this is that I do not collect objects for the sole purpose of collecting objects. The only thing I seriously collect is money.

To me, each of my watches are a joy to wear. I only have a few but I have most of the common complications covered: GMT, chrono, date, day, and your plain old 3 hand watch. Each of them bring a joy to my face as I rotate through them regardless of how much I paid for any of them.

Wearing! My third Rolex purchase was an Aug 4 purchased Basel 2018 released DSSD 126660. To date I have had two dives with the watch in Alaska, with some trips planned for September. I daily wear the DSSD as well.

If I didn’t dive, I’d primarily wear a 116719BLRO and not sure I would ever own the DSSD. But I am exceedingly thankful to the non-diver purchasers who make it worth-while for Rolex to continue to refine the Sub, the SD43 4K, and the DSSD to all comers.

I can respect owning without wearing.

Hate to say it, but it is a strange pehonimenon. New pieces hardly get any wrist time and some of them, though i consider nice like for example 126710BLRO would remain forever safe queens as they do not have same level of appeal to me as my classics like 116660 bought many years ago, or DJ41 or my beloved Zenith Port Royal RG. There are some that I definitely consider them icons - Sky D (no matter what kind of material or dial, except YG) for example, that soon will occupy at least a couple of days per month on my wrist. Strange is that still, when I wear my DSSD i feel like in haven each time I get a glimpse at it. I keep on asking myself whether it is really an icon or I am psychic already?

I wear one watch, but see nothing wrong with a collection even having some you don't wear. To each is own, no right or wrong!

I only own two now, however I did own more then three Rolex's before, it gave me no joy, just made me feel bad and depressed.

I find it actually complicates things a bit, wearing one and feeling I should wear another, then change and feel I should be wearing another......

I own two Explorer 214270 Mk1. The first I bought as safe queen. When I hold it in my hands I couldn't stand not to wear it and bought the exact same model preowned. After that my budget for watches was finished. Since then I wear it nearly daily (not in insecure places ) and have some cheaper watches for changing sometimes. But the worn Explorer is MY watch, the other only a precious piece of steel in the bank safe. They are identical, but for me only the worn one has a soul. Stupid, I know, but these are the emotions around watches...

That’s interesting ,, why did it make you depressed.
I’m in the same boat. I’ve had a lot of watches but now reduced to two and very happy with that, but I am looking at a third and wondering if it’s a wise choice

The hard to get thing will and does wear off very quickly as on this forum you soon realise 20, 30 other guys have the same watch. You get most reaction in an AD now ironically.

I currently have 6, couple more on order and 15 watches in total. Yes it is a problem. I started to wear watches at home as well which i never did before just to be able to give all the pieces some wristtime. I rotate daily and often even twice. Its a bit silly i know but the fact that they will keep their value (give or take) makes this "problem" manageable. Maybe one day i just flip the whole collection for 2/3 high end pieces.

If I ain't going to wear it I won't buy it. Everything gets rotated one day at a time unless I'm away. I love owning them, I love that most of them represent a particular time/event (which is always a good excuse to buy a watch!), I love admiring them, putting them on, taking them off, but above all I love wearing/using them. as the makers (possibly) intended. Today is Polar day.

I had 4 at that time. It is several reasons. The first reason was because I am not someone who change watches often. To me a watch is a tool I put on and wear 24/7 and almost forget is on the wrist. So forgetting to rotate the watches made me feel bad about having the others just laying there for months. I felt pressured to rotate them every now and then, just because it felt like a waste having such nice watches just sit there.

The 2nd reason was because I enjoyed wearing my Datejust 116234 the most, but I felt I should at least rotate through them all once a year and wear the others a couple of weeks each even tough I did not really want to, it was just a hassle. For those who look at a watch as an accessory to their cloths and change watch based on what they are wearing or based on what they are doing, it is probably not a problem. But for me it is just a tool I wear it to everything, and wean doing everything, swimming, the gym, work, traveling, casual, celebrations etc... So for 5-6 years I have only had one Rolex. Just purchased my second Rolex 3 weeks ago, well knowing and comfortable with the fact that it may go 3 months or 6 months before I rotate.

I am also considering a third, either a green dial OP 36mm or 39mm, if Rolex ever makes that, or a 16570. But I am debating with myself if I will end up in the same trouble as last time. So I will wait a while to see how it works out with two. So fare I am very comfortable with two.

I own quite a few watches. Some are queen safes but most of them i wear. I love my watches and enjoy wearing them. I have some favorites that I tend to wear more in rotation but most get worn. I have thought about downsizing but haven't done so. When I get two of the desireables, my collection will be complete. I may even consider downsizing to the ones that sing to me more but as it stands now, I am content.

For me it is a hobby and I enjoy the history behind the brands and ownership. I like wearing them and they become part of my day to day life. Trading/Selling them also allows me not to get bogged down with items I no longer utilize or wear. I equate some of my watch ownership of classic watches and brands to reading classic literature. They are classic because of what they are, it does not mean that it all works for you but you have experienced it and can decide what works for you.

I am neither a collector nor a flipper so I acquire pieces to wear them. It is the joy of seeing each particular watch on my wrist is why I buy watches.

I appreciate a great watch! I wear the JC almost 95% of the time and the others will get wrist time at special occasions. But I love them all and enjoy this hobby!

I have had 4 Rolex's and an Omega at one time. I have downsized to 3 Rolex's and am debating dropping on down to 2. I like all the ones I have but as time goes by the joy of ownership is diminishing. I finally excepted that I can admire a watch without having to own said watch. Also, once I got the white dial Daytona I kind of keep thinking where do I even go from here?

Spot on my friend. Everything gets old after a while.

Especially in a lot of cases when one realizes it is merely another Stainless Rolex....

I don't think of myself as a collector even though I have had 5 rolex and 2 Tudors.
Pretty much have a few for daily use and various attire.
I have a SS Date and a TT Datejust for dress occasions since I never felt that large bezel sport models wear well with a suit and I don't care what J. Bond wears, he's not real!
Sold a 16750 that I wore for 20 years because it looked old with a worn case and yellowed hands/markers. I like vintage but not when it looks old. I replaced it with a mint 16710 that is now my daily wearer.
Also had a green sub, got it cheap and never wore it because I don't like green. sold it.
I also have a Seadweller 16600 that gets lots of use.
If I liquidate I would still need at least 2.

Owning too many of anything does not make me happy. For example, I love photography and have a Leica M10 and found myself with a half dozen 50mm lenses and a host of other focal lengths. I really only shoot people at 50 and I like to have a wife for landscapes. While I enjoyed collecting different lenses with different signatures, but in the end, I almost always shoot my Zeiss 50mm Planar. So I’m selling my unused lenses and concentrating on enjoying photography. With the lens and focal length that works for me.

I’m doing the same with my watches. I’m keeping the go to watches and selling the rest, even though they are quality watches. I’m not happy owning things I’m not using.

I have some 40 watches. Not all are wearable, but I have them.

There are probably 25-30 that I rotate through in an irregular way.

I could add another 5-10 to the rotation, if I were to change the batteries.

I just added a Hamilton Khaki Automatic to the collection and I'm going to get my Hamilton Khaki quartz fixed, as soon as I get my newly acquired Benrus out of the shop, so that will be two more in rotation, besides the new Hamilton.

I enjoy that I own them all, functional or not, and I enjoy wearing the functional ones, even if I get around to some only infrequently.

It's hard to wear watches that you don't own.

It's nice that I can open a drawer or go to the bank and pick out something that's not been on my wrist in awhile and enjoy it until I get the urge to wear something different.

I've got Rolex no.4, expensive to me, on its way. I enjoy owning and wearing all of mine (all brands). It doesn't matter to me if they're the hard to get pieces or not, they're all hard to get because of the cost but my tastes are not so much for the current hot pieces either, so its not so much about the chase for me. Just saying I love, enjoy and appreciate being able to afford and to be part of a lifestyle which we all here seem to have and share.

Photography is my other hobby (besides watches) and I can totally relate. I shoot canon DSLR and have two bodies and over a dozen lenses where I mostly use two of them! It’s that rare occasion that I need to pull that watch (or this lens), knowing that you have it is nice!!
