She says that sounds fine... I get permission to wire the Cash. Hour later wire sent


Contact our Son, whom I think will be elated and l tell him that I want to give him an 8k Rolex but he has to wear it all the time. Swim with it, sleep with it, and shower with it...

His Reply, " I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. That is a nice watch and I'm not sure I want the responsibility of wearing a watch like that...
I need to think about it..."


First, I thought what planet did I land on and what Star Trek Episode is this...? Then I remember he works for the Apple store...

Then I text him back, I will keep it for you for when you are older...

So now I have one on the way, the Sub is still here, and the DW is happy...

Maybe he’s genuinely worried about it? If you said ‘hey, it’s just a watch but a good one so please don’t lose it or sell it, but if you got mugged or lost your arm in an accident it wouldn’t be the end of the world.’

Or maybe you’re right and he sees it as a bit uncool.

I’d be curious to find out which it was if it were me.

I had exactly the same situation with my son when he started his engineering degree eight years ago.
He didn’t feel comfortable away from home with a Rolex but he did accept an Omega Moonwatch instead and the Subdate still sits bnib in my tin tank with his name on the card.

He is now a test engineer with a multinational, hopefully he will pick it up soon.

If not possession is .... ....... .. ... ...?

Funny my wife had the same "I don't want to have to worry about it" attitude when I wanted to buy her a Rolex. She simply didn't want the responsibility of having to take care of it or worry about it. I get it actually. Kids (and some wives) want cheap watches they can throw around and if they lose it they just buy another. Different story with Rolex.

I think that you made a nice gesture and I am sure your son will want the watch when he reaches that point in his life when the watch fits him. I get it and respect him for being straight up about his thoughts. Just wear it and when he is ready pass it along.

I started working on my son when he was little...he’s now 10 and knows all the Rolex sport models...knows the icons who wore them...can spot a Panerai or Speedmaster in an instant!��

Many young people in teens and early twenties have different view on status and money what for example generations born before 1990 have. Value base is quite different. Of course trends change and quality watches might be their thing when they have reached over 30 years of age :D

Let's face it, most of us on here didn't get into the mechanical watch addiction until mid-life or later. Nothing unusual there. I was into my 40's before buying my first Rolex
