Got Super Lucky - Acquired A DSSD JC Addition By Randomly Walking Into My AD

It’s been a while I think since I’ve posted on TRF. So I wanted to share a story about a recent acquisition of a new deep sea sea dweller James Cameron addition, that I just picked up from my local authorized dealer.

This Last Thursday was my birthday and I was near the mall and decided to go in to my local Rolex dealer and talk to them about inventory. I knew there was a good chance they wouldn’t have any oyster professionals in stock, however I thought I would just ask and see if they could do anything for me. So when I went in I was met by the assistant manager of the store. She asked how she could help and I told her I was looking to pick up a stainless steel professional and I gave her a list of watches that I was interested in. Now I had just come from a customer meeting and I was all suited up, looking my best. She said ok, give me your license, I’ll go check your account to make sure it’s in good standing, and I’ll make some calls to see if I can find something.

About 20 minutes later she came out from the back with a Rolex plastic case and it was a Rolex Explorer 1. After trying it on I said I appreciate it but I already own an explorer 2, and it’s not what I’m looking to get at this time.

She said well the only other piece we have in stock is a Deep Sea Sea Dweller blue black with updated design and dimensions for 2018, and I think I’m about 80% sure I can get this for you if you want it. however our VP is currently on vacation and I’ve not been able to get her on the phone to get approval to sell this to you. But I see it’s your birthday from looking at your license and I would love to be able to get this approved for you.

Anyways, the folks at my authorized dealer spent over an hour calling the VP over and over and over again, until they finally got her on the phone and she approved the purchase!

Even though the model was not my first choice or even on my list. I have had my eye on the Deep Sea for sometime and I went ahead and put a down payment on it and picked it up the next day. The sales people said they had not seen one of these for nearly 2 years. You should’ve seen them, the store was buzzing with excitement, they were literally pining over this watch, it was crazy. Anyways, it was a great experience and it kind of renewed my faith in the AD buying process, that if the stars align properly you can still walk in and buy a Rolex specialty watch without being on a waiting list.

I posted a picture of the watch, sorry it’s not better quality. I’m traveling for work right now and will try and take some better pictures when I get back. Also my sales rep said the folks from Rolex we’re in earlier in the week for some event and they mentioned they probably won’t be making any more of the DSSD JC editions. Curious how accurate that truly is? Guess only time will tell.

Imo that was not a good buying experience. It's your birthday and you're paying for it, but it was as if the Ad was doing you a big favour or something, they kept you waiting for an hour while they make phone calls, the watch is in stock and you have the money to buy it, but they needed approval to sell it to you !?... wth is going on here where's the luxurious buying experience. Too much power on the seller's side these days.

Agree with this completely. It was nice of them to put on a show I guess.

Wow congrats !! An AD told me my queue is 340 in their wait list, and Rolex hardly send them any submariner in a span of 4 weeks.

How come you were able to buy a single watch and don't go for a bundle?!

I always felt it's a massive watch, but looks good on your wrist.

Nah you don't get it, he was prepared to buy it on the spot, he liked the watch. But he spent more than an hour waiting not knowing if Approval to sell would be granted. Yes it was granted but all the power is in the seller's side and they could've said no, so more than an hour of anxiety and hopeful then relief at the end.

A good experience to me is if they skip the 1 hour ''approval to sell'' wait and just sell it to him right there on the spot. He's there he's got the money just sell it.

Glad you got the DSSD - hope it wears well over time. It is big.

Lucky is right due to dropping in and getting one out of the vault.

Congrats OP what a great birthday gift (to yourself)!!

Gone are the days when you can walk in and purchase a SS Rolex, now it has to be approved by managers/VPs.

I am glad he ended up with the watch, but I agree with you 100%. All the jumping through hoops at ADs now does not equate to a good experience in my opinion.

Congrats on the watch though...you earned it via patience, LOL

Agree but I’m sure it wasn’t a game. I can almost guarantee by the way he is explaining all this it was Ben Bridge. They have the get approval from their VP to sell allowanced pieces. VP has to see a history with the customer in their system and in cases like SS Daytona the VP’s each get an allocation. It’s BS but true. When I got my old SS Daytona from them that was the process.
